Ds (3.5 ) is coughing like mad, it's really sore , and keeping him awake as it's roughly every couple if minutes. I've given him som cough medicine and sone calpol but neither seem to be having any affect. Us there anything I can do/give him to ease it a wee bit. The poor soul is wiped out with it, and I 'm worried if he doesn't get some sleep he's going to be really poorly, as he isn't eating much at the moment either

Not sure if it's recommended for children - so you might have to google - but I had very bad cough at christmas time, and as i'm pregnant, doc couldn't give me anything. but he told me to fill a bowl with hot water, chuck towel over and steam - breathing in deeply.

This sort of loosened all the crap and also seemed to soothe it a bit.

Hopefully someone will come up with another suggestion - but worth a try?

Would agree about the steam thing, you should try and create a damp atmosphere in bedroom , wet towels on a rad or a humidifier. Get him to stand in bathroom when you shower in morning.

We currently have a bowl of boiling water with vicks in it by DD , but she's still in a cot so no danger of her getting near it

Hi, Not sure which medicine you have given him but I found Baby Meltus brilliant for my daughter between the ages of 2 - 3. (available from Waitrose in the baby section). When really bad, I half-sat her up when sleeping (we both had one of those coughs that kicked in as soon as we layed down). I used one of those 'V' shaped cushions on top of a normal pillow. I even held her in my arms until she fell asleep then propt her up. The Dr. did give her some medicine as it went on for so long (3 weeks) but it really wasn't much good. If you get mega worried do take to the Doc's just to check his chest out. It's always worth it. Good luck x

A spoon of honey will help a bit.

Manuka honey is brilliant for coughs - antibacterial as well. Try to get 10+ or 15+. The steam is also good. Try a few drops of olbas oil in a bowl of warm water in his room (somewhere he can't reach!)

Someone also recommended vicks on their feet a few weeks ago! No idea how that works but apparently it does! :)

A humidifier and half a raw onion beside the bed, it works wonders for my DD. Also make sure he is propped up a bit.
