Brief history. DS3 was born on 14th Jan at 35+4. He weighed 7lbs 3ozs when born. We were both discharged on 16th Jan.

MW came and weighed him 17th Jan he had lost 9% of his birth weight, slightly jaundice.

MW came again 19th, he had lost 13% of his birth weight, still looking slightly jaundice so we were sent back to postnatal ward where he was seen by a paeditrician. They weighed him, took bloods, Kidney function came back normal and his jaundice level was high but not enough for treatment. They let us go and gave us an outpatient appt for next thurs (27th) to re-weigh him.

MW has been today and he's lost weight again! 40g.

He is bottle fed on Hipp Organic, takes 1-2ozs every 3-4 hours. At first we were waking him for feeds but now he seems to wake and cry for them himself, means we get more in him because hes awake.

He did the tiniest vomit yesterday, but thats it, he hasnt vomited at all since he was born. His nappies are very wet all the time and his poo has changed to yellow, he poos about 1/2 times a day.

I dont understand HOW he is losing weight?? Could there be an underlying issue which is being missed?

MW rung Paed at the hospital who was happy for us to stay at home and for MW to re-weigh him on Monday. I wasnt too worried initially but now th worry is creeping up.

There are some malabsorption syndromes where the proteins/fats or whatever are not absorbed. Stool specimens are tested for this also blood tests, if it continues I think the HV will alert you and refer you back.

The amount of milk he is taking sounds quite small, does he lose interest quickly?

Have they tested to see if he has a urine infection? My DS lost loads of weight in his first 2 weeks and the doctor found that he had a urine infection which they treated with antibiotics, as soon as it cleared up he began gaining weight again normally. The doctor told me that when babies fail to gain weight it's a big symptom of an infection.

He does need to be taking a bit more I think. I can't remember - is it 2.5 oz per lb in 24 hours? Is he very sleepy. Can you feed every oouple of hours?

My dd1 was born at 37 weeks and her sucking reflex wasn't great. Maybe as he was a bit prem, he's struggling with the actual effort of feeding. The amounts you say sound like not very much to me, but he's still so young. Is there any way you can get him to take a bit more each feed? If you are worried, keep asking the midwife/HV - they are there to help and don't let them make you feel like you are making a fuss.
