High fever and swelling next to eye- what could this be?

Just wondering if anyone has seen something like this or knows what it could be?

2 year-old DD started coughing yesterday. Last night she came into our bed and had a high temp (38.2) so I started panicking a bit about swine flu. The temperature went down after giving ibuprofen, she slept fine after that and has seemed herself most of the day. This evening though she's been tired, a bit out of sorts and she has a slight lump/swelling on the side of her face level with her eye. She says the other side hurts as well but there's no swelling there, just the one side. I don't know whether this could be linked to the fever? She says that she may have banged her head at soft play on Friday but she's too young to be very clear about what happened and today is the first time that I've noticed the swelling.

Any ideas?

If is an eye infection then i would cause a fever, how close to her eye is the lump?

It's not on or touching her eye, it probably starts about a centimetre or so from the side of her eye. It looks more like the kind of lump you get from a bumped head.

I would get her checked out in the morning by your GP, it might just be a bump and have nothing to do with her fever. Dd1 has had SF and dd2 is just coming down with it (i think) and has had the high temp 2 nights in a row (yesterday and tonight), has a slight cough but hasn't been too bad during the day (off her food slightly). Best to get her checked out, it might just be a virus or mild flu, keep a close eye on her and phone gp if she gets worse.

Thanks for the response, that pretty much confirms what I've been thinking. I've just told work I won't be in tomorrow, I don't want to risk nursery until she's definitely well. I'll see how she is tonight and contact GP in the morning.

strange. i think you should definitely get her seen. is the lump tender to touch?

Sinusitis? I know periorbital sinusitis can be dangerous.

Will look for a picture.
