My child (nearly 3) woke with a temp of 38 this morning i gave calpol which brought it down an hour later to 37.5.
2 hrs later it had shot to 39.9 she was sick. I gave 10ml of calpol followed by ibprofen 2 hrs after that. Eventually it came down to 38 after a tepid bath lots of drinks and stripping her off.

This afternoon her temp had risen to 39.7 again i am giving ibprofen and calpol intermittently and its come down to 38.7!
I have called shrop doc who say its probably viral but i'm still concerned as she is just lethargic and looks so poorly she is also asthmatic and not eating a thing!

No rash, she says nothing hurts.

I can't seem to keep this temp down very long!

DD had something very similar

Nasty virus - she is over the worst now but the first 36 hours were the worst

DD didn't eat really

My GP advised to give calpol and nurofen, strip her, sponge her etc

Have you any ice lollies? These are good for getting them ot take some liquid

It goes wihtout saying if her temp rises, or symptoms worsen seek medical advice ASAP

Hope she's on the mend soon Smile

Has she been vaccinated? because if she is also asthmatic you may want to see a doctor tonight and have him check if it could be swine flu so she could get tamiflu for children (taste foul mix with chocolate petit filous, chocolate sauce, etc.). GP or hospital can do a swab to see if it is influenza A (takes 15 minutes to get result) and if so great chance it is swine flu.

However, tamiflu needs to be started asap to be effective as it stops virus replicating, however, if there is already lots of virus then it is no longer useful. So hence ideally start within 24 hours of symptoms but at latest within 48 hours.

We are on day 2 of this with dd2 (4.9), dd1 is just getting over it and has all the sf symptoms (but started with a very high temp), i have also got it. I have just put dd2 to bed with a temp of 39.1, i gave calpol and nurofen but temp is not going down Sad, i am now sat in bed (feeling rough) waiting for dd to wake up and am checking her every 20 minutes. Hope you manage to get her temp under control, if you are worried then contact your out of hours GP or go to A&E.

We have same with DD - on third night of temps over 40 Sad and I can't bring it down with either calpol or calprofen. Came on here to see if anyone else had the same!

Phoned NHS Direct who have a 15 hr waiting time for nurse to phone back.

DD was refused SF injection last week despite being at risk due to neurological problems. Am worried sick she has SF now..

Marne · 16/01/2011 21:03

Its so worrying isn't it, dd2 has Autism but her health is good so no SF jab offered. She can't tell me how she's feeling so i dont know how bad she is, all i know is how i'm feeling with it and at times i feel really rough.

smashingtime · 16/01/2011 21:15

Have you managed to get her temp down Marne? Just wondered if you found anything that worked. Been doing capol/calprofen every 4 hrs.

Is horrible that you have it too - hope someone looking after you as well?

Marne · 16/01/2011 21:18

I must go and check on her, last time i checked it was 38.2 so down a little, dd1 is now coughing in bed so i must check her too. I have the window slightly opened in dd2's room and have just put her in a vest, she still has her duvet over her as she wont sleep without it. My temp has come down after taking nurofen and dh just brought me up a biscuit and a drink Grin.

Marne · 16/01/2011 21:22

Dd2's temp now 38.0 (down a little but still high), bless her, she smiled when i put the thermometer in her ear even though she's asleep.

Dd1 temp is 36 but coughing like a trooper.

My temp is 37.5 (going down slowlly).

I have now pulled dd2's duvet back (so she's not going to like me.

smashingtime · 16/01/2011 21:37

Phew - dd's also back 'down' to 38 so hope we're turning the corner at long last!

Hope you and the dd's are better soon Smile

Marne · 16/01/2011 21:43

Oh thats good, i hope you have a good night and she feels better tomorrow xx

onimolap · 16/01/2011 21:46

Temperatures in poorly children can hop around an awful lot. The crux of it is not so much the exact reading on the thermometer, but how your child seems. Children with high temperatures that seem fine in themselves (alert, bright eyed, not in pain) are far less worrying than one who has only a low grade temperature but is listless or complaining.

Go with your instincts.

Hope all are on the mend soon.

mummynumnum · 16/01/2011 21:50

my ds has temp of 38 but is soundo. Debating whether to wake and give med or leave. Find latter hard to do as dd had feb convulsions when little.

Marne · 17/01/2011 12:44

Dd2 still has a temp this morning but seems bright, is eating lunch so i'm not too worried.

I don't wake them to give meds in the night as sometimes sleep is the best thing for them.
