Those of you with dcs under 18 months, a question about lips

me and dh have just noticed that ds2 (14 months) his top lip, where the bit is webbed and joined to the top of your teeth doesnt seem to have any gap, its like the web is joined to the bottom of his lip, rather than in an adult where you have a gap and the web is at the top.
No issues with eating or anything else

Is this normal at this age?

it's a tied upper lip frenulum... common enough but not everyone has it. All three of mine do.

dd's is tied right onto her gum between her front teeth and has a huge gap because of it, ds1 ripped his to shreds falling repeatedly so managed to release it himself that way and ds2 has a tied tongue as well and has speech delay which doctors believe os being exacerbated by the two combined with a massive overbite and oral dyspraxia.

For most it's no problem but if he needs braces when older they'll snip it and it can cause a gap in the teeth like with my dd if it's tied onto the ridge of the gum. Some also claim they're children were speech delayed simply due to the tied upper lip but i don't know how extensive the tie would have to be to cause speech delay with no contributing factors.

My ds1's did split after repeated falls but you can still see where it was joined.

ds2 and dd have fallen on their's as well and split them to a smaller degree and they've just healed up the way they were before.

ds2's paed did say though that the majority of children with a tied lip do split it themselves by falling on it so clearly the norm is for it not to heal up but to remain separated.
