DS has one red eye for a few days, and it has been getting steadily worse. Today, I took him to paediatrician who said it is probably viral, said to wash three times a day, and prescribed Vitamin A cream to use if it gets redder & antibiotic drops to use in case of yellow discharge / puss.

Tonight it was definitely redder, so we put in the Vitamin A cream before bedtime. He has been rubbing his eye and sceaming ever since. (He didn't seem bothered by it before)

Meanwhile, DH noticed what looks like a spot in this red blotch that now covers half of his eye. Does anyone know what is might be?

I've Googled myself to near-panic. Please come and tell me i am being silly and children have red eyes all the time.

I've never heard of Vit A cream to put in an eye.

If he's been rubbing it he may well have broken the little capillaries causing a little bleed on the surface of the eyeball - this isn't serious and should settle down on it's own. Do you mean the redness covers half his eye, or a spot does?

Poor thing - I would rinse the cream out of the eye and see someone more specialist about eyes in the morning.

OK, children get red eyes some of the time. However, I'm not sure about that spot. Call NHS Direct. Leave Google to the doctors.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 21:44

No such thing as NHS Direct where we live (France), unfortunately.

Sounds like he's allergic to the cream. I'd see a doctor. Normal red eye can be conjunctivitus which is easily treated.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 21:47

He has rubbed his eyes once in a while since the start of this red eye but not ike the scratching frenzy that followed Vit A cream.

I meant to say that the red blotch on the cornea covers about half of his visible eye - one side of the iris.

I've seen conjunctivitis, but this looks different:

  • not general redness or lines of redness all over but a bright red blotch
  • eyes not runny
  • no puss

It sounds like what I have recently had ( twice in the last few months) and it's horrible. I could hardly see due to the red lump and the watery eye.

Do their eyelashes stick together after sleeping? I think it's viral based. I would use the anti-biotic drops but before hand bathe with cotton wool and lukewarm water. Then do this tomorrow after giving drops the time to absorb. If worse another Dr?

lifeistooshort · 11/01/2011 21:52

I'd take him to the pediatric or eye A&E. Don't want to scare you unecessarily but I have had something similar recently and apparently I have cought herpes simplex on my eyelid. It is very itchy and the doctor told me that it can get in your eyes and cause a red blotch. But of course I haven't seen your son so it might be something completely different. I think with eyes, it is always safest to get checked anyway

Catsmamma · 11/01/2011 21:52

does it look like a pool of blood?

that would be a subconjuntival haemorrhage...basically a bruise, as the conjunctiva is clear you see the leaking blood

it's consistent with heavy eye rubbing.

winnybella · 11/01/2011 21:53

There are different kinds of conjuctivits, bacterial and viral and allergic etc.

Not sure about the vit.A cream, tbh. I wouldn't put on anymore of it on his eye.

What colour is the spot?

winnybella · 11/01/2011 21:53

And yes, what Catsmamma says.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 21:56

Eyelashes stick a little bit in the morning but not much. No yellow discharge for thr rest of the day.

He didn't look bothered by it at all (until Vit A cream) and was his happy & playful self all day.

I wouldn't use antibiotic drop if it is a viral infection, though, as ABs don't work on viruses.

Yes, it looks like a pool of blood.

It wasn't this read yesterday, though. And the spot on this red "pool"? It looks like a wart.

OP posts:
winnybella · 11/01/2011 21:58

Cote- what colour is the spot? Is it just red?

winnybella · 11/01/2011 22:00

x-post. Hmm. Don't know. If I were you I would make an appointment with ophtalmologue.
I wouldn't panic, though.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 22:00

The spot is white. It looks like a wart on this deep red blotch in his eye.

OP posts:
winnybella · 11/01/2011 22:02

Hopefully someone will come with some answers, but honestly just call an ophtalmo tomorrow orning, make a lot of fuss, exaggerate and get an appointment for tomorrow. No point in worrying.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 22:02

Sorry for confusing spelling mistakes, courtesy of Apple's auto-correct. It wasn't this red (not "read") yesterday.

The only thing I can think of is that DP has little 'growths' on his eye whites, they are yellowish white and were caused by too much of sun exposure.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 22:11

We have a lot of sun here but surely DS can't have had that much sun exposure in his 19 months on earth?

OP posts:
winnybella · 11/01/2011 22:18

Hmm. I think DP got it after a year of hitchhiking through Africa.

Seriously, call ophtalmo tomorrow. They should be able to figure it out. Or go to A&E (tomorrow). Or call your GP back. Did the wart thing just appeared today?

DaftApeth · 11/01/2011 22:22

Have you seen this?

link here

Dh gets broken blood vessels in his eyes a lot. It looks like the White of his eye has turned red. It goes after a week or so.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 22:26

I guess there is the possibility that the spot/wart was always there but we never saw it because it never had a bright red background to contrast against.

OP posts:
winnybella · 11/01/2011 22:28

Yes, it looks like what DP has got. Still, have him checked out, but it could be that the spot is totally unconnected with the haemorrhage and possible viral conjuctivitis.

CoteDAzur · 11/01/2011 22:28

It doesn't look like those links at all, Daft.
