Ear Ache and vomiting. Anything to relieve until I can get to the Docs?

My DS(2.5) was in and out of my room last night complaing of a sore ear. He was really quite distressed so I gave him some Calpol and let him sleep in with me.

Today he has been much the same and has just vomited what looks like everything he has eaten all day.

He had a very very bad case of flu over the Christmas period and seemed to be on the mend. He is not feverish or displaying any other symptom apart from complaining of a sore ear and is very unsettled and weepy.

I will be taking him to the Drs tomorrow but is there anything I can do to make him a bit more comfortable?

I'm feeling a bit fraught as my OH is working away for the first time since DS2 was born.

Thanks and sorry if this was a bit rambly.

Forgot to say I am continuing with Calpol, although it only seems to help for 2 hours at most, but am loathe to give him too many doses as it advises on the bottle no maore than 4 a day. Also I used the NHS direct website and it advised self care as these things only last for a few days.

Just calpol and as many clear drinks as he will take. It's horrid when they are like this; can you wrap him in a blanket and sit on the sofa watching TV with him.

If you are really concerned it might be worth phoning NHS direct to see if they recommend taking him to the duty Dr to get antibiotics today - do you know what his temperature is?

Earache with vomiting and weeping probably warrants a doc visit today. Do you have a local walk in place? Otherwise, out of hours.

And ibuprofen is better with earache. You can alternate the two.

Warm water bottle to the ear too.

thingamajig · 09/01/2011 15:19

Aah; you need some calprofen or whatever ibuprofen syrup they sell at your chemist - it can be given at 4 hr intervals in between the calpol doses, so you can give something every 2 hrs. (I havn't explained that very well)

Thank you for your help! He is sat on the sofa with his brother watching TV now and seems ok if a trifle pale. He's asking for more milk but I've insisted on water. I'm going to ring NHS Direct now and see what they advise. We do have an out of hours Dr and my mum has said she'll take us if needed.

I have some calprofen syrup here. Didn't know he could have that along with the Calpol! Thanks again!!

Check the calprofen dosage. I think it's 6 hourly.

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2011 15:24

Meaning you can give Calprofen and Calpol alternating every 3hrs.

Not letting him lie flat will help with the pain a bit too especially at night. It only needs to be an extra pillow or rolled up towel.

I have now spoken to NHS Direct and they have given me exactly the same advise as you have, but said if the vomiting persists I need to call them back. Thanks again for all your help, I feel a bit less hand wringy now!
