Calling all experienced mums.....I would appreciate any suggestions on how to help my baby's nappy rash.

Its her first bad round of it, she is just cutting her first tooth and has a terrible cough/cold/nose too.. poor thing.

do you have any natural ways? any secret formulas or creams besides sudocrem?

am already using natural wipes, but should I stop them altogether?

Lots of good advice here. It's just trial and error to see what suits your dc. FWIW we washed in plain tepid water with cotton wool, dried thoroughly, aired a little then thin layer of metanium followed by slightly thicker layer of vaseline. Worked for both of our DD's.

Bepanthem is good.

The absolute miracle worker IME is Fullers earth powder-its simply amazing, it will clear a raw bottom by the end of the day.

its also cheap.

sorry i cant do a link to a specific page on a website so...you'll have to copy and paste or just google it!

Hi amberleaf. Sorry to be dense, but how do you use the fullers earth powder?

amberleaf · 09/01/2011 22:36

Hi Notenoughsocks!

I used to get it in little boxed packs by Unichem , i would just sprinkle some on like a talc, id get a pinch of it and put it on the sore part, its a very fine powder.

It lookes hideous though! its dark greyish in colour so the nappy would look dirty!

You can also get it in a cream base which i found good for general use but the powder was best for really sore bits.

One of mine had a very raw bum after a bad reaction to antibiotics and it cleared it up amazingly.

I know im gushing but its really good!

Nappy off time
Avoid acidic food
Avoid chemical products in the bath - bubble bath, soap, shampoo etc
Use natural creams, the best one I have found is cheeky baby barrier cream by Pitta Patta - they also sell lots of yummy bath products that are safe and free from nasty chems
Hypo allergenic wipes or water and flannel
Change nappy regularly
Try homeopathic remedies
Avoid all doctors creams

Antipeol cream worked great for us. Even better that Metanium. Its even thicker that Metanium and one application later we can see a big difference.

BonoboBabies · 13/01/2011 15:50

We were prescribed Orabase when we took DD to A&E on another matter and I took the chance to ask doc about her awful nappy rash. She had red open sores on her bum, very nasty, we had tried all creams known to man but they all sort of "slid off" the infected area. Orabase forms a jelly like barrier over the area - you just plonk it on, dont try and rub it in. Its not actually for nappy rash - its normally for oral lesions and stomas! but it was the only rhing that worked for us.
That and no wipes - just water and cotton wool.
DD is much better now so we are back to using Sudacrem but I still keep the Orabase for flair ups. Metanium, Bepanthen and Weleda nappy cream didnt work for us this time, although for DD1 we only ever used Weleda and she never had bad rash.

hobbgoblin · 13/01/2011 15:53

This is the nappy cream hierachy as far as I am concerned Grin:

Sudocrem
Bepanthen
Metanium

hobbgoblin · 13/01/2011 15:54

Sorry, need to revise and point out that the first is the worst...

Kamillosan if desperate
Sudocrem
Bepanthen
Metanium

nappyaddict · 14/01/2011 17:37

Morhulin
Thovaline
Siopel
Antiseptic bepanthen cream (weirdly the actual bepanthen nappy cream didn't work)
Boots Bottom Balm
Orabase
Conotrane
Magic Fairy Better Botty Balm
Green baby powder
Little green earthlets balm
Paw paw cream
Palmers Bottom Butter

Some natural remedies that worked with him are:

cornflour mixed with water or vaseline
emu oil
grapefruit seed extract
manuka honey
vegetable glycerine
sage tea
tea tree, lavender and witch hazel
cooled pearl and barley liquid (for both nappy area and to drink)
bicarb and oats in the bath
pure lanolin
pure shea butter

If none of those work you can ask for these on prescription:

nystan
aveeno
sprilon (I have bought aveeno and sprilon OTC as well)

Get the GP to take a swab to see if it is fungal. If it is ask for Clotrimazole cream.

I have tried:

metanium, savlon, drapolene, bepanthen, sudocreme, germoline, vaseline, zinc and castor oil, waitrose bottom butter, fullers earth cream, calendula cream, e45 nappy cream, kamillosan, vagosen, canesten, chamomile tea, red clover cream, benadryl, daktarin, timodene, arnica cream, egg white, organic babies salve, green baby balm, almond oil, rooiboos (redbush) tea.

MummyJummy · 18/01/2011 13:41

Drapolene, pink, light texture and wonderful, use every change, avoid the start of nappy rash. When teething/tummy trots results in nappy rash - Sudocreme, a little goes a long way and if caught in time next nappy change you won't believe the improvement on red raw bots!

Barbeasty · 18/01/2011 20:53

Olive oil is surprisingly good. I was told there's a remedy you can buy in France which is olive oil and lime water, you can't get it here so I thought I'd try the oil on it's own. It made it look worse the first time I put it on but cleared it up really quickly.

Otherwise I use a mixture of sudocreme and bepanthen.

Oblomov · 18/01/2011 20:58

Metanium. Fabulous.

peasizedbladder · 19/01/2011 23:20

my lo's bum was so sore it bled :o( metanium was the only one that worked. i applied it with a 'flat' cotton wool pad so as not to get covered/stained by it (cotton wool 'balls' shed too much). it does stain clothes permanently though

LauraHigh · 20/01/2011 09:19

Our daughter had is really badly for the first 3 weeks or so. We tried everything before changing from Pampers to Huggies. She is 13 weeks now and it hasn't returned :)

rockinhippy · 20/01/2011 09:41

METANIUM here too.....DDs problems turned out to be more food additive intolerance related (via breast milk as pre-weaning) but Metanium was the ONLY thing that helped sooth at all....& trust me I tried them ALL, prescribed & otherwise......its pure Magic, my Diabetic Mum now also uses it to prevent ulcers etc & swears by it.

Nappy rash & teething tend to go hand in hand, so that is likely the root cause in your case, I also agree with neutralising his more acidic wee by giving him the (real) barley water mentioned above, that will help deal with the cause....Metanium the symptoms

Weleda Calendula nappy cream is the best thing I have used and seems to last forever!
