It's not my child but my cousins dd. I'm not very close to them but when I have seen her and looked at photos she looks like a child with feral alcohol
Syndrome. do I keep quiet?? I know she drank huge amounts when pregnant.

I wouldn't do anything, and just hope that the health visitor/doctor notices something.

How old is she? (it's fetal btw, was that a typo!)

Are you close?

if the child doesnt have FAS her difficulties will probably be picked up in nursery

you could contact your cousins GP or HV, if you know who they are. they will listen to your concerns but tell you nothing. they will not give your name to your cousin

peggotty · 03/01/2011 20:40

It may be that it has already been noticed. If you've only seen photos and you're not close to her then it's unlikely to be something she would tell you perhaps? Is she an alcoholic?

Sirzy · 03/01/2011 20:41

I don't think there is anything you can do and it is one hell of a judgement to make simply on how the child looks. I would be quite hurt if someone untrained was to make comments like that to me TBH.

If there is a problem it is up to the HV/GP etc to sort not you

Consuela39 · 03/01/2011 20:56

I'm not sure what good it would do, Lisa - the HCPs she's involved with will either notice a problem or not, and if they don't perhaps the child is only mildly affected or does not have it at all.

I'd be upset too if someone said that about my child.

FAS or not, there is no way back, so really they need support, also, there could be various genetic conditions that can perhaps have a similar appearance - I would thread carefully with any judgement as they might be upset already
