How do you treat tummy ache?

My DD (2.5) says she has tummy ache. It's always hard to tell at this age what they really mean but she's had a vile nappy, is slightly hot and has not eaten much of her tea. I think it's genuine - I know children use the phrase fairly broadly.

Anyway, I've never had to treat tummy ache before and realise that I don't know what to give her. I believe fluids for hydration and milk to soothe but how about calpol for pain? I think she'd be unhappy with a hot water bottle and things such as peppermint tea that an adult might use. She doesn't do 'new' very well.

Thanks for any advice.

I would give calpol but not milk. If she's brewing a tummy bug then milk will probably just make her throw up. If you can coax her to use a hot water bottle that's as good as anything.

Dd often complains of tummy ache when she is I'll and has a temp.

She complained of it so frequently a few months ago that I took her to the GP to be checked.

He said that there are glands in that area that can become enlarged, just like in the neck, when they are fighting off a bug.

I give Calpol if my dcs seem in pain or they have a fever. I do not think it fair for them to suffer pain if I can remedy it with neurofen or calpol.

Hope your dc is better soon

I'd go water and cuddles.
Avoid dairy.
Calpol if in pain.

Thank you, I'll be a proper Mummy one day with your help!

I would not feed her, but loads on Mumsnet will disagree with you.

She is probably brewing a gastric bug or is constipated.

Either way you will know within a few hours Xmas Grin.

No to Calpol.

Sorry, disagree with me.

Tummy rub and hot water bottle with not very hot water and a fluffy cover if poss (I've lost my teddy one to DD1 Smile).

Don't make the same mistake I did with DS and give him a tummy rub while he was facing me. Within 3 seconds I was covered in sick. Repeat after me: point nauseous child away from you.

Stomachaches in tinies are so hard to deal with - your heart just goes out to them. And I know what you mean about MN making you a proper mummy - I'd be so lost without it.

Definitely not constipated bibbity judging by the nappy she did before bedConfused. Thankfully I can pull the heavily pregnant card and avoid nappy changes when convenient. Oooh, my back, can't bend over, sorry darling, I would if I could.

Equally, shall pass on the point the nauseous child away from you tip to my DH, whilst I turn over and go back to sleep.
