When do you need to worry about a rash ?

My 2 year old ds had a rash. It appeared yesterday morning.. It looks like an alergic rash to me, hot blotchy and red. We think it was caused by some chemically glittery princess bath stuff his sister got for Christmas. He doesn't seem bothered by the rash but it looks so angry and is over a lot of his body :(

Do I need to rush him to the drs ? I can be a bit neurotic about his health as he was v prem and v poorly for a long time. I dont thibk I need to take him but I'm panicking a bit that I'm making the wrong decision.

He doesn't seem under the weather at all but he's having piriton and carpool incase it is hurting and is running around in the nude slathered in aqueous cream.

Is there anything else I should be doing ?

piriton and keeping a close eye sounds wholly reasonable.

MiasMARY · 28/12/2010 15:49

That's for the reassurance :)

I've not don't the glass test, it's a completly different type of rash that the meningitis sort. It looks like he's fallen in a patch of very stingy stinging nettles !

urticaria by the sounds of it

MiasMARY · 28/12/2010 15:53

Is it normal for that to randomly move about his body. ?

yes. esp if it was a bath product.

any swelling/breathing problems get him to A&E, otherwise keep on with the piriton. sometimes children react to a virus with an urticaria rash also but sounds more of an allergic response.

MiasMARY · 28/12/2010 16:00

I've just googled and it's identical for dr googleimages !

Will keep a close eye on him but he seems absolutly fine in himself.

How long should we expect it to last ?

Thank you :)

you could take him to a pharmacy?

blinks · 28/12/2010 16:12

shouldn't take long to go but if it's linked to a virus, it can come and go for a while. best keep him away from highly perfumed products as his skin may be sensitive to fragrance.

My DS has just been diagnosed with this. Asymmetric Periflexural Exanthem of Childhood. It started with a rash, but it is a virus. Not dangerous but very contagious

MiasMARY · 28/12/2010 20:34

Sorry to hear your lo is Ill too Gordon. :(

I do wonder whether my ds's is a virus too, we've just all had swine flu and had just returned to feeling vaguely human so I suppose he's probably still a bit run down.

Thanks Blinks. I've raided the 'sensitive skin' aisle in tesco so hopefully we can irradicate any irritants.
