My 9 week old son has very dry, rough skin on his face. Have been using olive oil on advice of gp and hv but not making any difference. Can anyone recommend anything that may help?

Epiderm cream

Available at chemists or on prescription (it's expensive)

Can use direct as ointment to skin, to wash with or to melt in the bath

It's AMAZING on dry skin (have used it on 2 of mine who had dry skin)

Double Base is also good - on prescription. Have you tried E45, or is 9 weeks too young? Good old Vaseline?

MmeLindt · 27/12/2010 22:23

Wind and Weather Creme by Weleda is brilliant, all natural ingredients.

stressheaderic · 27/12/2010 22:26

Would also recommend putting a bowl of water on a shelf in his bedroom if you have central heating. The air is so drying his time of year.

I've been doing this in my 10mo DD's room and it is amazing hhow quick the water evaporates, even though we try to keep her room quite cool.

MegBusset · 27/12/2010 22:28

E45 not ideal as it contains lanolin which can cause reactions. Don't use aqueous cream either. A specialist emollient such as Epaderm, Doublebase or Aveeno is your best bet - you can get these OTC or on prescription.

Oilatum always worked best on DS.

alypaly · 28/12/2010 01:08

its probably chapped from the cold weather. diprobase cream during the day and diprobase ointment at night is really goo. used it when ds2 had very dry skin after a bad burn.

FrustratedHippy · 28/12/2010 01:17

vaseline is the best thing i find. those little cheeks get so sore and vaseline is fab - gentle - stays put- healing.

nappydaysagain · 28/12/2010 08:34

I also recommend getting Aveeno cream on perscription. It's very gentle on babies skin and works remarkably quickly.

Thanks for all the suggestions thats brilliant- will go round the pharmacy today as its all flakey now and prob not get drs appointment at short notice this time of year.

We used shea butter on all of ours.

ethelina · 28/12/2010 22:44

Doc prescribed Hydromol twice a day all over for Boy. It's worked a treat his skin is so soft now and no red/angry patches at all.

truthyruthy · 29/12/2010 13:59

I would recommend Aveeno Cream on prescription. My daughter had very bad skin problems I had been given Epiderm/Doublebase and E45 nothing worked better than the Aveeno.

Check out the website for more Info on Aveeno

I would add to last message that the Baby Aveeno range is amazing and cleared up my DS's eczema very quickly. Not available on prescription and expensive, but worth it! There is one UK supplier you can find on google, called softskin I think

lelarose · 31/12/2010 18:45

Thanks all. We were away for a couple of days in the country and the only thing I could get hold of on the way was Epaderm cream from the chemists. Its worked well and his skin is now pretty much cleared up. Thanks for all your help.

Hi, just incase you want some more options! I use a great, organic and natural barrier cream from Pitta Patta, its safe to use and works a treat on dry skin, sensitive skin and nappy rash. No chemicals which makes it safe to use on your little one.
