Tips badly needed for nit removal!

Actually mean nits - the empty egg cases/fresh eggs, rather than the lice themselves. Have a 4yo with us at the moment (brief respite/foster care) and she came absolutely riddled with lice. I Hedrin'ed and wet combed with lots of conditioner in the shower today but her hair still has so many eggs/egg cases in it looks like she's going prematurely grey, but they're really hanging on for dear life.

Tried the NittyGritty comb, worked a charm for dd when she had them (obviously a LOT less though), but didn't seem to make a dent on LO, I went over the same section for a while and didn't see any noticeable difference and after a day with Hedrin, a shower and a long wet comb the LO was getting quite distressed anyway so had to leave it. Is there anything I can use to get the eggs to drop off or otherwise help shift them? Have heard of leaving olive oil on to loosen the grip of the lice but what works for the eggs?

Sorry, I'm far too slow at posting! I only have a cheapie compact camera but will see if I can take a few snaps when I look at her head again tommorrow. Definitely agree Trinity, even if I'd known how bad the lice were I'd still have said yes, just glad it was something I knew how to deal with. Not sure if I'd trust myself with kerosene KB but the Hedrin had them dropping out everywhere so hopefully most if not all are gone (until new ones hatch) - I wouldn't have believed before one child's head could hold that many for starters.

Thanks for all the kind words and help, unexpected (I only put the background in because I didn't want anyone thinking I'd been responsible for it getting that bad Blush ) but very welcome. Will need bed very soon (going to be a busy day tommorrow now!) but will update when I can.

Hi, you can get rid of them by combing, but you will need to spend lots of time every night combing through.
Combing is far and away the most effective way of removing the eggs and bugs. The chemical treatments are not always effective as the lice around these days are becoming immune to them. (plus the eggs still hatch out anyway)

I would suggest using a normal white plastic nit comb first with conditioner. Tea tree oil or tea tree conditioner helps soothe the open sore bits, (and it's a lice repellent)
divide the hair into sections and comb away, do it in front of the t.v with a bowl of water and plenty of tissues to wipe away the bugs from the comb.
Then finish off with the nitty gritty comb but you have to wash that comb in water between each combing as the spirals trap the eggs so well and you don't want them ending up back in the hair.
If you do it every night you will start to see a big improvement and after a week or so you'll stop finding bugs.
You will need to keep going twice or three times per week to catch any new hatched bugs.

Good luck.

Hi I use Neem oil for head lice when it occurs I put the neat oil into a normal or teatree conditioner and add copious amounts and then comb or brush through whilst in bath or towel, also I know you don't have a bath but I use a large tuff tub i got from asda for my 3 yo for a quick wash sometimes to save filling bath, she can just about recline, maybe you could pop one of these in your shower cubicle for lo because nits can't breath under water you can drown any hatched eggs to give her relief from itching until new ones hatch, the neem oil is natural and has healing properties so it won't harm her scalp it renders the nits infertile so once new ones have hatched they can't reproduce. This should help loosen debri too. I got my neem oil of ebay, good luck
