Why do they ask if she was born at night?

My daughter has been in hospital a couple of times recently with a wheezy chest and when they are going through their routine questions about her birth they always ask if she was born at night.

Is there some long term implication for babies born during the night?

Ds has a lot of chest problems and this isn't something I have ever been asked. They have asked if he was term/ normal delivery but never about the time of day!

There was a paper released in the British Medical Journal earlier this year which had found that babies born late at night or early in the morning often didn't get their respiratory problems picked up as well as those born at other times due to lack of staff and specialists around at the time. Or that was what I remember from the news coverage at the time.
I don't have the paper but you could Google. Perhaps this has raised consciousness within the hospital?

That is interesting, thanks. I will try and find it.

There were no complications at birth and she has got to 2.5 without any problems like this at all, in fact I have always thought she was as strong as an ox so a bit of a surprise when she did start wheezing although her Dad has asthma, eczema and allergies.

Thanks jumpyjack I was wondering myself as all my Dcs born in the middle of the night but none of them has respiratory problems. "Glad" to see it is related to the way hospitals work at night rather than condition due to baby being born at night.

fizzpops with her dad having asthma ,eczema and allergies, there is a strong possibility that she will develop one of those 3 as it is gentically linked. it may not be as bad and she may grow out of it...but it is cmmonly linked genetically

How odd. I thought most babies were born at night!?

fizzpops · 22/12/2010 16:39

Thanks alypaly - that is what we have been told but obviously is a 'wait and see' scenario. I always just feel that she is more like me healthwise as we have very similar childhood histories of eating/ weight/ general health - until now that is!
