I used to give it a 3 hour gap.
You can only really give ibuprofen 4 times a day so I did......

10am nurofen
1pm calpol
4pm nurofen
7pm calpol
10pm nurofen
1am calpol

You're welcome. depending on how bad it gets, you could give them at the same time, as long as there is a 4 hour gap between the same meds he'll be fine.
Hope he gets better soon

Thanks silvery - seems ok as long as topped up! Not that unusual for him to get such a high temp but usually calpol does it. Fingers crossed he is better for Xmas

but also strip him down to his undies to try get the temp down. cold wet socks also work well.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/12/2010 13:13

I alternate aswell.

If their temperature remains high a tepid bath really can do alot of good.

It's a horrid experience and DS1 (8) sobbed the other night when he got in the bath but depsite meds his temp wouldn't come down and the bath really helped.

His temp came down and he got a decent nights sleep.

Thanks all, done the sponging down stuff all night, bless him. Seems a bit more settled now.

Hi Dribbleface and anyone else reading.
Hopefully DC is on the mend now but just for your information and anyone else reading, if a baby/child has a temperature, you should NOT bath them, regardless of how warm/tepid/cool the water is. Nor should you sponge their body (other than forehead) with a cloth.
This can force the body to heat up too quickly and cause febrile convulsions, as the water quickly cools the body and triggers a response in the brain to reheat, hence pushing the body temp up very quickly. It is the speed of increase which is reason for convulsions.

Safe ways of managing a temperature:

Strip down to nappy / undies
Alternate nurofen/calpol (Silverymoon's timings are great!)
Fan in room but not directly on child
Lots of fluids, ice lollies etc
If its nightime, just a cotton sheet over the child.
If you see goosebumps, cover with a cotton sheet until they've gone away.

Qualifications - mum of a DD who has a history of febrile convulsions when she was a toddler.

Best of luck!

The instructions on the bottle of the nurofen (ibuprofen) says three times a day so it is safest to stick to this. BUT...

If you add the mg of the three doses together and then divide by 4, you can give four times a day as the amount is still the same.

eg. 100mg x 3 = 300 divided by 4 = 75mg

I think the dose is then 3.75 ml if 100mg = 5ml of ibuprofen.

Otherwise silvery's schedule is perfect.
