Would you give toddler Calpol for temp of 38.1?

Taken rectally. DD (22 mo) has a wet cough, runny nose, not a great appetite (although fine when it's something sweet Hmm).

Couldn't bf before bed as nose blocked up, tried the sucking thingy, helped a bit, anyway, she feel asleep on the breast, woke up when put down in her cot, complained for 3 or 4 minutes and fell asleep (I think).

I took her temp just before bf and it was 38.1 rectally. I didn't give her anything as I am of the old school of thought that fever helps fight the infection- but I'm wondering whether it'll go up a lot and I'll wake up at 2 am to a very hot toddler.

It seems to me to be a standard cold, not flu, iyswim.

Would you? Or better wait and check on her in a couple of hours?

Er...yes, they do. At least in France they do. But I guess France is still stuck in the Dark Ages Hmm

Point is you express your opinion in an agressive and offensive way, that's all.

Doris, the NICE guidelines do not recommend reducing a fever unless it is causing discomfort. The fever is the body's way of fighting the illness. I agree with winny that your posting style is unnecessarily aggressive.

Yes give 2.5mls calpol open windows a little to let air circulate let her sleep in knicks and vest with cotton sheet and cold compress on her head always brought temperature down in my son.

There is a baby vapour rub you can use on children from 3mths that should help with snuffles. My son doesn't like it rubbed in so I tend to put some in a bowl with hot water so the whole room smells of vapour thats effective for snuffles aswell.

I use the fever scan thermometer you can get them in Boots relattively cheap just hold them on childs forehead for 30secs gives an accurrate reading in younger babies the stomach is best place to check temperature as hands and feet get cold so quick and difficult to get babies to keep their head still.

No, wht do you think a fever is for?

I do administer Calpol or Junior Nurofen when DS has temp, I have a Calpol Electronic Thermometer, which bleeps if the temperature is higher than normal.

DS has had a high temp on and off over the last week. I also cool him with cool damp flannels, his feet and hands become very hot. I hate the idea of him being in pain or discomfort, he can't tell me where hurts or how he feels and I know if I had a high temp, sore throat or pain etc, I would want to take something to make me feel more comfortable.
