I'm pretty certain that DS has thrush. He's 19 months old and developed a rash on his botom 4 days ago - only the second nappy rash he's ever had. It's worse today and spreading but he doesn't seem too bothered with it.

Tonight though I noticed white spots in his mouth also.

I've never had any experience with thrush. Can I treat it without seeing the doctor? Is it very contagious? Will his mouth be sore? He has been unsettled this evening and moaning a bit which is unlike him so I was wondering if it's that.

Any help Gratefully received :)

Poor little thing!

Some children are more prone to thrush than others, often for no good reason, but as it's his first episode I think it would be worth your while getting your local GP or Practice nurse having a quick look at it just to check.

It's quite distinctive in appearance, the creases in the chubby bits are often not involved, there may be a picture or more info if you look on 'nhs choices'

There are very effective skin/bottom creams and also medicated mouth drops, although I suspect that many pharmacists would not want you just let you buy them (for the first episode) over the counter as he is so young.

No, it is not contagious, just usual nappy changing hygiene is fine..and by the way, don't think it's a poor reflection on your care of his nappy area, just unlucky!!

So best to get it briefly checked, I think - good luck.

Thanks timetosmile - I am indeed smiling. You told me everything I needed to know :)

Will pop to docs in the morning then. Best to get it checked and get the right medication for it.

Feed him natural LIVE yoghurt if it is thrush, and plaster his bum with it too.

Thanks Jux - he is dairy free though but I could slather it on his bum though. Bit worried it might undo all the recent progress we've had in encouraging him to eat his food instead of wearing it though :o

We went to the doctors today and he was totally useless. He looked in his mouth well, tried to but DS was having none of it. And said I can't see any thrush. He's fine. Hmm

I asked about the nappy rash and he said 'it's nappy rash - I don't need to see it. Just use any cream on it. He's not really a baby now he's walking - children don't really get thrush - just babies. He might be teething.....'

Angry I should have pushed for a proper check up but DS was upset as it was his nap time and I just kind of nodded and left.
