dd2 is 2 and a half, but very petite for her age. she has now been constipated for 2 weeks tomorrow, i took her to the doctors because her bottom was red and looked very sore, he prescribed canesten andthis cleared it up, he also prescribed lactolose which i have been given her for a week now , at more than the prescribed dose, she has had a couple of hard poos at the weekend but they were lodged in her bottom and i had to ease it out Sad she is straining constantly.
i was still concerned yesterday so took her to the local walk in centre, the doc there prescribed anusol and movicol and also supposotries... which everythime i insert one it comes out as she is straining so much Sad
i really dont know what to do, its awful seeing her like this, i just want it sorted out....
can anyone advise me ?

I'm sure you are doing your best re diet/fruit/vedge. Is she getting lots of fluids, apple/orange juice? It is often not enough fluids that cause simple constipation. Regarding the suppositories. They need to be pushed in about a cm beyond the anal sphincter, the tight muscle. You then need to keep her lying down and hold her cheeks together long enough for them to disolve (20 mins) or until they are soft enough for her not to push out.

The trick with childhood constipation is to get completely cleared out (movicol is given on an increasing scale) then to manage the situation very carefully. You are obviously in the pre cleared out phase!

Hello OP

DD also has phases of constipation and is about the same age/size as your DD. She was straining too and little pebbles would come out.

I took her to the GP and they said I should feed her lots of wholemeal bread/pasta/weetabix/muesli etc. I did so and it did seem to soften up her poo well, she did an absolutely huge one which she was immensely proud of. DD does not really eat much veg but does like fruit (fresh and dried) and drinks a good deal. Looking back on it it reminded me of when I was on the Dukan diet (mainly protein) and I had little pebbly poos too. Digestive biscuits were also quite helpful as a snack in nursery to increase wholemeal consumption.

I also use canestan but put a layer of vaseline on top, then set with baby powder, to protect her skin.

Good luck, it's horrible to see them like this.

atm its hard getting her too eat anything because she is so blocked up, dont think there is anywhere for the food to go Sad
trying to get her to eat veg/fruit like she normally does, but anything she eats atm is a bonus....
i dont think i could manage getting the supposotriy so far up, she would scream the house down lol the instructions are crap on the leaflet lol !

I find that Jordan's Country Crisp with Chocolate and lots of milk is very popular with DCs and is miraculously effective for constipation! Clementines are also very good and seasonal; apple juice also good.

Get some Lactulose from chemist (not sure if you need to see doc first cant remember!) it basically softens the poo making it easier to pass etc. Put it in small amount of juice etc or milk). DS suffered from baby to 2 yrs old then had to have it again when potty training, helps a lot :-)
