Floppy ear in newborn

DS is 12 days old - have just noticed whilst feeding him that one of his ears seems like it is totally not attached to his head apart from the very tip top and the very bottom - can fold it over very easily and it's extremely floppy!! The other ear isn't like that...

I have read that newborns' cartilege hasn't hardened completely but is this normal? Don't want to ring GP tomorrow in a blind panic if so Grin

I thought that they were all floppy Xmas Blush.
If it's not a problem to him now, then I'd just wait until I saw my HV to ask about it.

DC have a 2nd cousin with an odd-looking ear, it's not an unsurmountable problem. With the right haircut you don't even notice.

i saw a program ages ago (so i'm very well qualified to answer!!!) that showed prem babies born before x?? weeks with floppy ears as their cartilidge doesn't harden until so many weeks into pregnancy. The nurses were making sure the ears were placed properly under their little hats so that they were in the right position when it did harden.

My other half had to have his ears pinned as a child as he always laid on one ear folding it over.... so I would be a little wary of hats/sleeping positions etc Wink

Oooh thanks peasized - DS was born at nearly 33 weeks so could very well be the answer. Will make sure his ears are properly placed!!! Grin
