From barely responsive to the Wii in 4 hours: The miracle of Calpol!

Was very worried about DS2 (9) this morning. After a very bad night (3rd in a row) this morning, he was collapsed out in (my) bed with a soaring temperature (battery went on digital thermometer at 40 degrees). He was floppy and whilst he'd open his eyes when I commanded him to, he wasn't answering any questions. Got all I had, a dose of Nurofen, down him. I called the GP whose triage nurse told me to get Calpol now and made him an appt for 2 hours hence.

Couldn't find DH, (was in a bit of a panic by this stage: DS2 isn't a sicky child, I was way out of my depth!), managed to get my mum to drive over (20 miles) with some Calpol which, with great difficulty, mum holding him upright, we got into him. An hour later, the GP has diagnosed tonsillitis, prescribed ABs and wants to see him again 7 hours later, post 2 doses of AB, warning me that if he hadn't wee'd by then he might need to go on a drip, which is fair enough.

Isn't the NHS fantastic?

Anyway, right now, he's wee'd, had half a small plate of ice cream and is sipping water as bidden but is sitting up playing the Wii . Thank god.
