Ds is 9, he has severe autism, allergies and athsma, he also has a long history of recurrent chest infections.

He has been having difficulties with his asthma for a few weeks now, mainly coughing at night>

On the doctors advice we increased his brown inhalor to two puffs twice a day and the ventolin when needed. The GP said it would take up to six weeks to notice an improvement but was confident that he did not have a chest infection at that time.

He has been hacking his guts up the last three nights, not eased by ventolin. Is very tired and lethergic but it is impossible due to the severity of his autism for him to verbalise his symptoms ie/ shortness of breath etc.

I know this sounds daft, but what do I do? The GP said 6 weeks for an improvement but it does seem like he is worse.

I would go back to the GP if your ds appears to be getting worse.

Six weeks sounds like a long time. Usually when my children have their inhalers increased you can start to see an improvement after just a few days.

Does your surgery have an asthma nurse who can give you a more experienced opinion?

Thanks Coppertop, he has an appt with the nurse in Jan, think that was the first available appt.

Have you tried talking to an asthma specialist nurse on the Asthma UK adviceline, Mon-Fri 9-5 free from a BT landline. Contact details here. They are very knowledgeable and friendly, IME.

i have a preventor, and it takes only days to work

i personally - with no medical background- think that 6 weeks is bollocks.

your child is exhausted

take him back - if no luck

take him back again

and again

at some point someone will listen

i agree with taking to see asthma nurse - usually infinatley mre patient and understanding and have more time to give a shit
