Measles?

I posted this in general health but I think this might be a better section for it.

My dd (15 months) recently had a high temp for a few days followed by a rash. The doctor suspected it might be measles and took a swab to be sent off for analysis. My dd has not yet had MMR as she is too young.

Having googled measles, my dd had a lot of the other symptoms associated with measles (e.g. cough, diarrhea, temp that was very high, then went away and reappeared with the rash etc).

However, the rash massively faded within 24 hours and virtually disappeared within 48 hours. She has not had a temperature since the day after the rash appeared.

My question is, does anyone know if it is possible to have measles and for the rash to last only a day or so? From googling, it looks like typically it lasts nearly a week.

I know I'll get a definitive answer from the GP at some point, but not sure when. Also, I"m keeping her in quarantine for the recommended number of days, just in case. I guess I'm just wondering.

I don't know, sorry, and I hope she gets better soon, but I just wanted to say mmr is done at 13 months (in England at any rate, not sure where you are), so I would get on to it pdq once she's better.

Thanks. The MMR is done at 15 months around here although will be changing soon to 13 months. I have every intention of getting her vacinated - having read up on measles it's not something that you want to get if you can possibly avoid it.

No need to thank me, I wasn't at all helpful!

But thinking about it, could it be german measles the doc was talking about (rubella) - much less severe and short lived. Dd2 had it at 11months, even though you're not meant to be able to get it until a year old. It was similar to what you describe (plus also brief conjunctivitis). Just a thought.

On the general basis that in medical matters you should never say never, then yes it's possible for measles to be that quick, but usually you'd think in terms of 5-7 days if no complications.

I think you'll have to wait for the swab to know.

But so was wondering if the progress of the rash followed the classic measles pattern: starts with small spots behind the ears, these spread down the body whilst the older spots spread and join up. When they fade, the skin often looks grubby for a while. Was your DD's rash like that?

neolara · 12/12/2010 22:19

Onimolap - I'm not really sure how the rash started. Two days before the rash was really obvious, dd came out in hives. Her face and body were very blotchy and red because of this, and she also had more eczema than normal - at least I thought it was eczema. As a result, I didn't really notice the rash in the beginning stages. I only really noticed when she woke up and her chest and back were covered (already joined up?) in a really obvious this-isn't-quite-right rash. It didn't spread down her legs though and her skin doesn't look grubby.

Lukewarm - the GP said it might also be German measles but googling symptoms made measles seem more likely.

Thanks to you both for your thoughts.

Try looking up rosacea too.

I know this is a very old thread but I thought it might be worth updating for anyone who might be in the same situation.

My DD has recently been diagnosed with nut and tomato allergies. The rash I described in my OP was,in retrospect, almost certainly an allergic reaction to something. Recent allergic responses have almost all followed the same pattern of hives, rash and massive eczema flair up. I suspect the rash was particularly bad on this occasion because I didn't recognize it for what it was and therefore I didn't give her any piriton.
