11yr old DD with enormously swollen glands in neck....

Just wondered whether I should be thinking along the lines of possible glandular fever for my eldest DD who has golf-ball sized glands in her neck (no exaggeration on the size!), is extremely washed out, sore throat, bit of a temp and generally feels very poorly....got her to the doctors lastnight who said she's just got a bit of a throat infection, hence the glands etc.

Other than getting a blood test done is there any other way of trying to find out if it is glandular fever?

Hi there,

Unfortunately not. I had glandular fever at her age but was very lucky as I felt completely well (unusual I know). The only reason they tested for it was because I had a very large (golf-ball sized as you say) lump appear in front of my right ear.

Having said that, it's not uncommon for glands to swell up really violently with a throat infection as apparently it's the body's way of fighting the infection (so the GP told me). It's worse if the glands don't come out apparently.

I would give it a few days and if the glands are still as swollen go back. If they start to go down and the throat starts to heal, she may not have it.

HTH
