He's only got a cold but I think he's teething as well. He's had a temp all day (no therm, so don't know exactly what it is)

He had 3ml neurofen before bed at about 6pm, and I've just given him 5ml calpol. He seems slightly cooler.

Should I dose him with another 2.5 of neurofen in an hour or so? He's really hot and uncomfortable and I'm worried about him. He's 3yo but has never had a temp before, so I'm a but worried - it's not like him.

I find ibuprofen is better at bringing down temperatures. V rarely have done the 2 hour thing, but if the temp does not come down after 1st dose, I generally give the other medication 2 hours later. This was on recommendation of a doc when ds1 was little (under a year) and had a high temp over several days (again, teething and cold/ cough). This was 4 years ago, so maybe guidelines have changed...though companies are tending to cover their backs with ultra safe regulations. My motto is usually an extra dose of Calpol is safer than driving on the M25!

Thanks for all your advice everyone, he had a very bad night last night and was red hot most of the time (despite maximum allowed doses)

he's a lot better today and has just had a massive dose of neurofen which should see him through til 2am I hope - failing that he can have some calpol in a couple of hours :)

Surprisedthat no one else has said this but the advice now is NOT to give paracetemol/ibuprofen solely to bring down a temperature. As pain relief, yes but not just to reduce a fever. The fever is the body's defense against illness. It is a good thing. here is some information that might reassure you. Hope he feels better soon.

bubbley, that's really interesting. I still don't understand why they are obsessed by taking temperature in hospital then. If you had a temp of 105/106, I would think it would be fairly obvious by the way you looked!
