Cold weather making toddler scream in pain

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My 16 month-old DS - a sturdy, happy little boy who usually LOVES being outside in all weathers has started crying and screaming in pain about 10 mins after we go out.

This started when I picked him up from his childminder's on Monday evening. He was fine at first but then started crying hard as we walked home. Same thing happened yesterday morning and again just now.

He is teething and someone suggested the very cold air could be hurting his gums. Sound likely?

I should add he is wrapped up as warm as possible - including a hat covering his ears and a scarf.

We are now effectively housebound in a small flat. I'd love to hear any suggestions about what might be causing this and what I can do.

Thanks

What kind of mittens has he?

My toddler was doing the same, and is also teething. Today she added the useful info "hands, cold, hurts"

I am looking online for thicker mittens right now.

My two year old finds the cold wind on her face a bit too much. I carry her on my back so she can hide her face away, but she cries after about ten minutes if I get her down. I think it's just really, really cold for the poor wee things. Like I said, she's fine on my back and she's also fine in the buggy (which is quite 'deep' IYSWM, so her face has some protection from the wind). Maybe you could put the rain cover on your buggy to keep the wind off? I know that's no help if he wants to walk/you need him to walk...

Unwind, it's so much better when they can tell you that stuff, isn't it?

Yep, she has only just started to speak, and has somehow gone from mute to incessant over night.

Her favourite thing to say is "silly Mama" Hmm

Good point Unwind, his mittens are a bit rubbish (as he takes them off and throws them from the buggy incessantly so we buy cheap ones) but maybe I should get some better ones.

leafinthewind I might put him in the baby carrier on my back later and see how that goes. I put the raincover on today but only have he had started crying (and after he had already been out of the buggy for a bit) so maybe too late.

Can't wait for him to be able to tell me what's wrong!

My DD does the same - but also does it with the raincover on. :( She'll be completely wrapped up and once we've been out for a couple of minutes she'll just scream and scream. I've even taken to wrapping the scarf around her face so only her eyes are visible. However, she hates gloves, scarf, hats so it's all a bit tricky.

I would drive to places, but it's so icy I don't feel safe to drive.

Oh this parenting lark is trickier than I thought it would be!

With regard to mittens, I just got some great ones for my 8 mo dd, from Amazon called Snuguns, come in loads of lovely colours, but most importantly they stay on really well (go all the way up the arm, over or under coat), and are really warm (contain wool, but not itchy). Got fed up with ordinary mittens just being taken straight off! Dd seems happier since she's been wearing them.

Dc3 has the rain cover on the pram permanently as the wind hurts his teeth/cheeks.

Balaclava? Would it help if he could munch on something?
