Bleeding behind the ears

I have recently noticed my DS (almost 7) has lesions behind both ears, along with dry skin patches. Tonight, he caught his jumper on his ears getting undressed and these lesions started to bleed.

I was a bit worried - I did ask him if anyone has hurt him at school (he has another mark on his face and nobody seems to know how it got there). He has said that he's not having any trouble, and I am at the school quite a bit and have not noticed anything.

Has anyone else seen this kind of thing with their kids?

Should I get him to the doctor immediately, or see if the lesions improve/heal over time? Any advice welcomed.

I used to get this when I was little - very dry skin behind my ears which would split bleed then ooze and go crusty and repeat the cycle. My mum used to clean them with warm water on cotton wool then apply lashings of the 80's South African equivalent of sudocreme. It came and went and eventually stopped - The doc thought it might be to do with the shampoo we used.

I would see if keeping them clean and moisturised over hte next few days helps and if not then see the doc.

My dd had this, the doc said that it was infected eczema & gave us antibiotic medicine & creme. It cleared up quite quickly after that.

Is it worse in the join between ear and head (IYSWIM)?

Sounds like eczema. I had it as a child and DD has the same. Gets worse in winter.

If it is this then a mild case can be treated with aqueous cream to keep it moisturised and prevent cracking.

If it gets sticky, there may be an infection and the GP can presribe fucidin or similar.

yup classic place for eczema

emollient and maybe hydrocortisone cream worked really quickly for ds

Thank you all for your responses! We have some eczema cream in the house - I might try this and see if it helps.
