Can't get Amoxicilin in 21 mo

DS has ear infection but I can't get the AB in him. He gags and sicks it back up when I syringe it in and as he's only really on breast milk at the moment I can't mix it in to anything.

Does anyone have any top tips? And do you know if it comes in any flavour apart from evil banana?

Don't think it comes in any other flavours but there may be another antibiotic that does. You may need to go back to the GP and ask him for another. I can't get the a/b that is the best one for DD's UTIs down her so we have to have amoxivillin instead as she'll have that no problem. Will he cup feed EBM, can you mix with that?

winnybella · 24/11/2010 19:43

Are you sure you're syringing it correctly ie into the cheek?

Mix with yoghurt?,mashed banana?juice ,bribe with a smartie or similar? .....Good luck

TheHouseofMirth · 24/11/2010 19:50

Winnybella I think so. He's basically gargling with it when it hits the back of his throat and he's very ditressed.

Viva I've tried mixing it with tropical fruit juice but the only thing he's consuming in any quantity is breast milk straight from me.

The GP said I could specify a flavour from the chemist but the pharmacist said not and looked at me as if I was mad. IME GPs often know less about drugs so I'm not sure whether I should try and speak to a pharamcist before going back to GP.

Hmm. Are you doing it slowly, bit by bit?
Any chance he will have ice-cream or similar?

You might have to get other ABs.

oricella · 24/11/2010 20:26

amoxycillin comes in a few different flavours - DD hated banana, loved the citrus-y ones - but pharmacy may not stock different ones; you could alo ask for Amoxil- which is more concentrated, so bigger chance some will go in

What sometimes worked for us is giving it off large coloured spoons - choosing a colour seemed to give some control and she took it fine

and if clutching at straws, sneak the syringe in along with the breastfeed - worked with us at 12 months, not so sure it would do at 21, but worth a try (sticky boob small price to pay)

Neat squash worked for some nasty steroids DD1 had to take once.

My DD will only take medicine in banana milkshake. Can you express and mix it with a bit of nesquik?

mylifewithstrangers · 24/11/2010 21:50

I got DS to take his by bribing him with some of those over-sized chocolate buttons. I'd break a little bit off to give him the taste, after that he'd willingly open up for the syringe, just so that he could have the rest of the button. Worked a charm!

TheHouseofMirth · 24/11/2010 21:56

Just to clarify, he does normally eat & drink stuff other than breast milk, it's just that now he's ill that's all he wants. The tropical fruit juice has worked a bit but he just won't drink enough of it. Have also tried ice cream and Rolo chocolate mousses...

:)

seriously, banana milkshake. apparently banana masks the taste of almost any other food it is put with. my dd wont take any medicine unless it is pink. however she has had penicillin, nurofen and ovex in milkshake.

if you can do it in a lidded cup with a straw then he wont be able to smell it either.

TheHouseofMirth · 24/11/2010 22:11

I suspect a fundemental problem with that might be his basic hatred of bananas...
