Flu jab for a 3 year old ?

My 3 year old boy has just been offered a flu jab by our GP surgery. I believe he is being offered this because he has a history of persistent chest infections and has an inhaler prescribed for this. I have a few questions and am hoping someone might help with them?

  1. He currently has a chesty cough. The flu jab is being offered on one day only, in 7 days time. Do you think that since he currently has a chesty cough his immune system is fighting that and so the flu jab next week is not a good idea as it is too much for him to cope with?
  1. Do kids normally have any reactions to flu jabs? When my elderly father gets his, it almost invariably gives him some flu symptoms for a while afterwards. Is this likely?

Do please share your thoughts !

DS had the swine flu jab last year just after his 2nd birthday -- fine, no ill effects. I don't know anyone IRL whose child had a problem with it.

I dunno about the chesty cough impacting things. I imagine you should phone the GP surgery for advice on that point.

I agree with ragged. If your DS was fine - would you be giving him the jab? If it is just a question of whether you should give this when he has a chesty cold, i would take advice from the GP. I would also say that the surgery is probably exaggerating that there is only 1 day. They usually have mop up sessions at a later date, or the surgery nurse could do it at an arranged appointment.
Overloading an immature immune system can have effects, but not always. Seek professional advice

My DS has just had his second dose of this (it is his first year of having it so he needs two doses.) No ill effects at all from the first dose.

I think that the normal advice is that minor colds are ok, but for anything else it might be best to wait until they are better. But check with the profs.

My ds now 7 dd1 now 5 and dd2 now 2 all had the swine flu jab last year, with no ill effects at all from any of them, I have the flu vaccine every year and never have a problem with it, not sure that really helps you though, sorry.
