Is it normal to be this poorly with chicken pox?

Dd2 came home with a few spots yesterday but was still full of beans, she slept from 7pm intil 4.30am, she then fell back asleep on the sofa, refused her breakfast (not like her at all) and was then sick after sipping her drink. She's still very sleepy but still not very spotty.

Is it true that the less spots they have the more poorly they are?

Is it normal to be sick with chicken pox?

DD1 was very poorly with chicken pox. She had loads of spots eventually but, before they came out, she was feverish, lethargic and had no appetite. Then the spots came out ('twas very entertaining - I swear you could see them erupt!) and she actually felt better after that. Then she spent the next week or so looking ver' attractive with a spotty then scabby face Smile

Hope she feels better soon.

My DD had very few spots but picked up a chest infection which made her very poorly - she was ill for almost three weeks and lost lots of weight.

My DS on the other hand had few spots and was not badly affected at all - he is generally a more robust sort of chap though and doesn't often get poorly.

It can be. DS1 was very poorly with very few spots. DS2 was absolutely fine but completely covered in spots.

Thank you ,the spots seem to be comming out slowlly, she's managing to get herself to the toilet but is very floppy Sad. She's just had a drink (fingers crossed it stays in).

Just waiting for school to phone to say dd1 has it Grin.

I have sent dh to get Toy story 3 dvd for her (well more for me) Grin.

ok, now they are multiplying faster then i can put cream on them. How do i stop her from scratching them?, dd2 has Autism and doesnt really understand not to pick.

are you giving piriton and painkillers? That helped, and also use aquaeous calmine cream as it doesn't dry out like the lotion which can make the spots itchier

Poledra · 23/11/2010 10:01

Second the Piriton - it really does help with the itching and, on the plus side, made DD1 drowsy so she dozed through the worst of it.

Marne · 23/11/2010 10:04

I'm struggling to get anything into her, she wont take anything by spoon or syringe, i have snuck calpol in her drink, we are plastering on the aquaous calmine cream. She seems a little brighter/more awake and is singing along to 'ben and hollys little kingdom' led on the sofa.

She never makes a fuss when she's ill, she tends to sleep things off, i'm dreading dd1 getting it as she makes a real fuss if she's ill.

They usually have a couple of days when they feel rubbish whilst the spots are still coming out then after that they just look awful but feel ok.
If you think she's got anything chesty going on do ring your GP but otherwise she should be back to normal in a couple of days.

Watch out for oral thrush as well while her immune system is down. DS got it and it was one reason I think he was off his food and drink because it must taste horrid.

I also filed his nails to make them smoother so when he did scratch it didn't do as much damage.

Hope she feels better soon.

my dd was very poorly with chicken pox, she was sick and really lethargic and feverish, and the boys were fine! Hope she gets better soon xx

Marne, I empathise! I'm locked down at home with 2 Chicken Poxy children. Only the second day and we're climbing the walls. DD is only a baby and coping brilliantly, but DS is 3 and the itching is driving him Doolaly. We too bought Toy Story 3 to cheer us up, which it did, but also made us cry Biscuit. Ho hum, no doubt we'll watch it again tomorrow and every day until we're allowed to go out again.....Good luck! x

fifitot · 26/11/2010 11:05

My DD was really ill with it. High temp, sleeping all day, wouldn't eat or drink. The worst was over in a couple of days once all the spots appeared.

You can get something from the chemist to reduce the itching - not camomile, something specific, sorry don't know what it's called!

ChateauRouge · 26/11/2010 11:42

Dd is just getting over it, and has been very poorly- lost loads of weight fromeating nothing but jelly (they were all in her mouth too), she has been so listless, and unable to concentrate on anything, even being read to, poor girl.

Piriton has helped a lot tbh- she's been good about not scratching. Oats in a sock over the tap for baths is good for skin.
