Hi, wonder if anyone can help. DS2 (13mths) is desperately constipated. Straining and crying everytime he needs to poo and manages a tiny pebble once a day Sad. Has been going on for about two weeks.

We have reduced his milk, upped his water and given him fruit and prune juice, but nothing seems to be easing it Sad.

Help Blush.

The dreaded Fruitshoots always work as a violent laxative for us. Otherwise maybe the Doctors?

Thanks Forties! Was wondering how soon we should bother the doc Blush.

I would definately see the doctor as soon as you can. Better to sort it quickly because that way the bowel doesn't get stretched out so much (and create more constipation problems).

He will perhaps be put on to lactulose or a baby dose of movicol which works by drawing lots of water in to the intestines and softening the poo.

You've done the right thing - just sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, unfortunately.

Until you get to a dr... could you try warm drinks and a warm bath. Apparently cycling their legs can help a bit too.

Good luck and hope you get it sorted very soon x

if you're trying the obvious stuff and it's not helping I would take him to doctor.

KnittingisbetterthanTherapy · 19/11/2010 21:40

Thank you. We've tried the warm bath and cycling legs too - and massaging his tummy Sad.

Looks like I need to see a doc doesn't it? Hope he hasn't done any damage already Blush.

Thank you for all your help. We got him some lactolose yesterday and it's done the trick Smile.

Rather tooooo well actually! Shock

My DS (21mo) also suffered from constipation at a similar age. We sometimes need to help him along by mashing a few prunes into his Weetabix. We also cut out bananas for a while which helped. I'm glad your lo is OK now. :)

KnittingisbetterthanTherapy · 21/11/2010 22:07

Thanks Pluto. Prunes in his Weetabix sounds like a good idea Smile. We want to make sure we do what we can to stop it happening again (it was so unpleasant for him Sad) but also need to make sure we don't go too far the other way - his nappies today were a little too runny! Blush

I've been putting a tablespoon of the stewed pureed prunes that I made for DD (who was a bit constipated from weaning) into a cup of apple juice for DS. With a good shake it disappears and he drinks it all. It's more than he would drink of actual bought prune juice on its own.

It seems to have helped keep him very regular (he is toilet training and gets very upset if pooing requires any strain). I have to make sure I do it once a day though. DS is a bit surprised that I am suddenly so keen to offer him juice instead of water or milk :)

I have recently discovered Lactulose thanks to advice on here. :)
