A little background so you can see where I'm coming from:

DD was born at 27 weeks and is now 19 months.
We had 3 readmissions earlier this year with bronchiolitis (well, one was 'post viral wheeze', the other 2 were bronchiolitis). 2 were 3 day admissions requiring oxygen (and one a 12 hour stay in HDU) and one was simply overnight - also requiring oxygen.

After her final admission we were given a ventolin inhaler and told to use it if she seemed wheezy up to 10 puffs every 4 hours.

This was in May.

She's been fine since - a few colds (which were always the precursor to admissions) but staved off with inhaler.

She's recently had a really grotty cold (started Saturday) which she also shared with me! It's a horrible cold, and to be honest, I still feel pretty rough 5 days later.

She is still really snotty (thick green - thick white, constant) and has a deep chesty cough. She is not struggling to breathe and isn't wheezy. Sometimes she coughs till she's sick. She also coughs overnight, disturbing her sleep.

I'm thinking about having her checked by the GP - not cos I'm overly worried, but just to check that I don't need to be worried, IYSWIM. If I phone the GP now, they'd probably fit us in later today.

Tell me I'm daft and it's just a cold and I don't need to bother the GP.

As a mum to an ex-27 weeker myself, who had CLD for a while, I would get your dd checked out. I am sure all is fine, but just to be sure. Hope she is well again soon.

hillyhilly · 18/11/2010 14:29

I hate to bother my GP but given your history think that you probably should get her checked out, no good GP will ever make you feel as though you're time wasting
Hope you both feel better soon

Poledra · 18/11/2010 14:34

I'd get her checked out - her history is such that no GP should make you feel like a timewaster. To be fair, our lovely GPs never made me feel like that when I took my full-term monsters along with dreadful snots.

Go to your GP. I know they would much rather treat a poorly child than a sick one.

Sometimes she coughs till she's sick. She also coughs overnight, disturbing her sleep.

Classic asthmatic symptoms (I am asthmatic, too).

Also, the constant snot and deep chesty cough would worry me. Possibly antibiotics may be needed if she doesn't start to shake this off within a few days - it may be turning into a chest infection.

I am sure your GP won't mind you making an appointment in the least. Better safe than sorry.

None of what you have described worries me, tbh, all sounds like the usual horrible Winter coughs and colds. My 11mo ds had bronchiolitis at two weeks old, and I am very aware of his breathing etc when he has a cold, as I'm sure you are.

I do think if it will put your mind at rest, I would nip to the GP. She might check his SATS for you, which would make you feel better.

Thanks for the advice - I was expecting lots of people telling me that it's just a cold and not to bother the GP. I've phoned and in fact they've had a cancellation so we're going up there at 3:30.

I'm sure I'll be told 'It's just a virus' and just to keep an eye on her, but that's fine! Will let you know.

(Oh, and I have never been made to feel like a timewaster by the GPs - they are lovely and I am always made to feel I've done the right thing!)

Good luck, glad you are going

Poledra · 18/11/2010 15:05

Good - let us know how you get on, won't you please? Smile

Galena · 18/11/2010 16:06

Well, it's a virus! However, the doctor did give me a prescription for antibiotics in case she gets worse over the weekend so that I don't need to bother Out of Hours. Also instructions to go back at the start of next week if she's still not throwing it off.

She has some wheezing, but not a huge amount, and nothing at the moment to indicate anything worrying. Whew. Thanks all.

Oh good. What a nice sensible doctor.
