About 6wks or so ago my 7yr son woke in the night crying, I went in and his body was jerking, it seemed to be only his right side,I calmed him down and it stopped, I was totally confused by this, OH said he'd hurt his ankle in Judo the same evening, so he went back to sleep and I thought it might of been a muscle spasm or something to do with the ankle, it wasn't till the morning he told us he'd hit his head aswell.

He went to school the next day and was completely fine, but I managed to get him into the gp that afternoon. She couldnt find anything wrong and gave me a leaflet about head injury and what to look out for.

He has been completely fine up until last tuesday when I was woken by a strange cry and went in to find him having a full blown seizure, whole body jerking, and the worst part was he seemed not to be there...his eyes were glazed over and slightly flickering and he was totally un-responsive to us.

We of course called an ambulance, he must of been having this seizure for about 8mins or so, he was literally just coming out of it when the ambulance arrived. He cried that he 'couldnt wake up'. He was very wobbly after and we struggled to get his dressing gown on and into the ambulance. He was very pale afterwards and was sick whilst in a&e.

We spent 9hrs up the hosptial, they done his normal obs like temperature, he was responding to questions well. He had reflex test and blood test all fine. They even done a ct scan, all fine.

So the hospital has referred him to a neurologist at great ormand street to have an EEG.Im still waiting for the phone call for an appointment and Im getting a little frustrated now as every night is a constant worry. The hospital and written in his notes that he is classed as having two seizures now and the first was apparently a focal seizure and the 2nd a clonic tonic seizure?

He had a routine eye test last monday and the optician noticed straight away that he has one pupil slighty larger than the other and has written a note to my gp about this. My gp phone me this afternoon asking to see him first thing tommorrow.

I know we will get to see a specialist and hopefully get some answers. I think I just need to vent and maybe get some advice as to what may be wrong. He has always been a healthy boy..its just a bit of a shock that all of a sudden he may have to live with this.

Oh what a worry SugarSpike.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice really except to say if it is epilepsy, my BIL and MIL have this and take medication that means they lead completely normal lives.

Hopefully you will get some answers soon.

Bump for SugarSpike.

nightcat · 12/11/2010 10:59

can't help on the epilepsy front, but would like to know the significance of one pupil slightly larger as my ds has that too

SugarSpike · 12/11/2010 11:09

Thanks for the bump :o

He has been to the gp this morning, she has checked his eyes again and reflexes, all ok. She says he does have one pupil slighter bigger than the other and the neurologist needs to be aware of this and shes going to call great ormand street today and gee up his appoinment for me she wants him seen within the next week.

I asked what a slighter larger pupil means and she said it normally means pressure on the brain but she's look for that and it seems normal.

Nightcat...is your ds's pupil alot larger than the other?

Sugar, glad he seems OK after the check.
TBH I hadn't picked it up myself, the optician did, you would need to look really closely to see it, maybe about 1/3 radius different.
But my ds is also a little lopsided and had some neurological problems in the past, thankfully now much improved, not epilepsy related, although he did have some night tremors. The neuro at the time didn't pick up on pupil size.

SugarSpike · 12/11/2010 11:26

Yes it was the optician who picked up on his aswell about a week after, they checked his eyes in the hospital after his seizure and didnt mention it, whether or not thats because they were normal then or they just didnt spot it I dunno. I havent noticed so dont know if its related to this or not, until I see the neurologist.

If your son has seen neurologists in the past then I would think he's ok, if your worried just take him into the gp, its obviously something that they will look at and take seriously.

I still have a hotline to the original neuro Grin even tho we don't see him any more on a regular basis, so might try to get his view.
In a way, I am glad you mentioned it as it reminded me about it.
Pity you don't know if the pupils were like that before Judo incident, maybe it's nothing to worry about.
Hope you get some good answers.

SugarSpike · 12/11/2010 12:14

Oh thats good nightcat at least you can ask advice.
Yes its annoying that I just dunno if its something thats developed since the seizure, does seem a bit of a coincidence. Thank you for the kind message, hopefully all will become clear soon..though so far the doctors seem stumped by it .

i am interested in the one pupil larger than the other- my son has this too but he has had no seizures he is 4- however my 1 yera old has had 2 seizures which they say were febrile seizures- i will have a look at his pupils though when he wakes!
i do hope your son is ok- i still have flashbacks of my baby fitting its horrible.

SugarSpike · 12/11/2010 16:16

Hi enimod, yes it was very horrible, and I was so scared, Im sure it will run through my head for a long time yet.
Maybe having one pupil larger is nothing to worry about, might just be my ds's doctors are worried because of the tie in with the seizures.
