dd2 has been poorly since thursday, took her to the docs on sunday with a rash that turned out to be an ellergic reaction. All day today she has had a high temp and
has been shaking and her lips keep going blue. Shes slept most of the day, we just took her back to the out of hours after speaking to nhs direct and he said just keep giving her nurofen and to give her calpol aswell.

Shes had nurofen since friday, is it really safe to keep giving it to her?

Why are her lips going blue? the doctor didnt really say much about it.

Hi, I can only think the shaking and blue lips is a reaction to the high temp. Do keep her dosed up and keep a close eye overnight. Have they tested urine? After 5 days of being ill with high temp my drs seem to give anti biotics to my two. If no better tomorrow I think I would get an appointment with your actual GP, not out of hours. Hope she's better soon, its awful when they're poorly.

Haliborange · 09/11/2010 20:25

It's fine to keep giving the nurofen. It can be harsh on their stomachs though so I'd probably try to give it after she's had milk or something to eat.

How high is her temperature?

Did the doctor notice her blue lips?

Tbh that is something that probably would worry me and I'd look to get it checked out again sooner rather than later. I have a vague recollection that it can be (but isn't always) a symptom of something more serious. So I'd want a second opinion I think.

Haliborange · 09/11/2010 21:12

Booney - how's she doing now?
I forgot to ask before, are her hands/feet cold?

booneymooney · 09/11/2010 23:04

Hi thankyou everyone.
CharlieBoo my actual doctor is shit so i wont be taking her there unless it's my last resort. Im going to register with a new local doctor tomorrow. No they didnt test her urine.

Haliborange her temp went up to 41.2 when the doctor checked it. She wont eat but i'll try and get her to have milk. No she was still shaking at the docs but her lips werent blue. When i spoke to nhs direct she said that if i had called when she had blue lips she would have phoned an ambulance. I always thought if your lips went blue it was because you were cold but she said it was not enough oxygen getting through :(

I mentioned that to the doc and he rolled his eyes Confused

Yes her fands and feet were freezing, what does that mean?

she was very sleepy after we gave her calpol and nurofen together but woke up an hour later and did a huge poo and told me how much she loves me :)

Shes in bed now though.

Ok, I wouldn't be worried about the height of the temp because that doesn't give any indication of the seriousness of the illness. I would be a bit concerned about the cold hands and feet though. It can be totally normal when they have a high temperature BUT it can also be one of the early symptoms of meningitis. I don't mean to scare you by saying that - I just want you to be aware!

Another test you can do is the thumb print test - apply pressure to her forehead with your thumb for a few seconds. When you take your thumb away it will be paler - count the number of seconds it takes for the colour to return. It should take about 3 seconds - if it's slower than that then you should get her seen. Just to be sure it isn't anything serious.

What is she like in herself? Obviously she's miserable but is she responsive etc? You obviously know her and if you have any concerns then just take her to a&e or OOH or whatever you have near you. I hope she feels better soon - please keep us posted!

booneymooney · 09/11/2010 23:29

It feels like with all been ill for a month, both dd's only just got over a chest infection then dd1 got an ear infectio and now dd2 has this :(

The doctor done something on her fingernails to see if the colour returned and he seemed satisfied with it. but i will do what you have said.

Shes just s sleepy and normally she is like a little hoover but shes not eaten properly in days :( she really perked up at the docs so i dont think he believed me when i said she has slept all day. Shes had 2 cups of juice and a lemonade ad i really had to push her to drink that.

He said if she is worse tomorrow then to take her back.

Don't worry about the food. It's normal not to have an appetite when you are sick. She'll make up for it when she's better! :) Just keep pushing fluids and maybe offer fruit if she feels up to it (easy to digest so the body doesn't have to work too hard while it's trying to fight the bug). The finger test is the same thing as the forehead thing. Glad it looked ok. Hope she feels better after a good sleep. Try to get some rest yourself.

ok, is she still having episodes of blue lips? central cyanosis (blue lips) can be caused by many things...

sometimes it can be a sign of compensated shock. this can be extremely serious and with the symptoms you have described, i would recommend she go to A&E tonight.

i am NHS24 call handler/advisor.

blinks · 10/11/2010 00:16

he's checking for oxygen levels when pushing the nail beds. if the colour returns quickly, oxygen levels are at 'normal' levels. continuing blueness around lips is very concerning though and that temp is very high. she REALLY needs to be seen again quickly.

bubbleymummy · 10/11/2010 08:14

how is she today booney?

Haliborange · 10/11/2010 08:24

Booney - as Bubbley said, a blue tinge and cold extremeties (coupled with a high fever) can be early signs of meningitis or septacemia. They can also just be the result of the fever but obviously the only people who can distinguish the two are going to be approproately trained medical staff.
I have to say I don't have much faith in OOH, so please get her checked over by your GP or the hospital today.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

CharlieBoo · 10/11/2010 09:48

How is she today? Better I hope...
