My son is 18mths old and still only has four teeth which are at the front and no lower teeth at all.....not even any sign of them coming! Does anyone know if this is normal or should we be worried? Thanks

I would take him to a dentist - it is remotely possible that the teeth aren't actually there. Whether they are or not there's nothing to be done about it, but I guess it would be reassuring for you to know?

Mind you they'd have to do an x-ray to confirm - would you be OK about that?

Rocketbird · 08/11/2010 22:00

Can I ask a really bizarre question? What is his hair and skin like?

oswald07 · 08/11/2010 22:03

His hair is blonde and thick and his skin is normal...Why?
Yeah I think a trip to the dentist is in order....would he need to be under general for xray at his age?
Just to add to the mix, his 16yr old half brother has a dental problem....he has hardly any adult teeth! He still has all his milk teeth except four i think.....genetic problem maybe?

Good, that's what I was hoping you'd say :)

Sorry to be mysterious. My nephew is 26 months and has not got a single tooth. They took him to a dental hospital last week and it seems he has a condition that affects the outside of the body, so to speak, so very very white blond wispy hair, pretty bad eczema etc.

I've asked on here loads of times about children with no teeth and never got a single response so a red flag went up when you posted. Sorry, I didn't know how to ask without blurting it out and worrying you but yours sounds like a totally different kettle of fish. Shit, I'm making a balls up of this, sorry. It's just fresh in my mind. But if you say his half brother has issues with his teeth then it definitely sounds genetic.

re the x-ray, I don't know about a GA, I think it depends how amenable he is to being mucked about with - for a whole mouth x-ray I think they just (just! haha) have to sit still while the machine goes round the outside

but I may have forgotten what actually happens, it may be that something has to be held inside the mouth at the same time

anyway def see a dentist for advice. good luck Smile

Goodness, what on earth do they do about it? Yeah my son's hair is very thick and no skin problems. I think you're right, something genetic.....will get it checked out.

I have some simular worries.
My son is 17months and has no teeth at all!
Seems to be teething all the time though! Seems he is having all the pain for nothing to happen!
Oswald07 let me know if you get any news, in mean time think i will have to get an appointment for the little man.

IME they won't do anything before they're 2. Mainly because the only thing they can really do is x ray and they won't do that before that age. It wouldn't hurt to mention it to your dentist though and maybe try to get an appointment for when he turns 2 so you're not waiting for months afterwards. then if teeth appear before then you can always cancel it.

My ds didn't have a single tooth until he was over 2 yrs. I took him to the dentist, who reassured me it was nothing unusual and we just waited patiently.... He now has a lovely full set, they all came fairly quickly once the first few appeared and now, at 5 yrs you would never know he was once a toothless 2 yr old! I tend to be very laid back about things but as far as I understood it was never anything to worry about.
I suggest a trip to the dentist just for reassurance and a thick skin to ignore the busy bodies you no doubt encounter everywhere you go (as I did!) Also, do you brush morning and night? We always did, just to get him into the habit at the right sort of age x
