Can't send dd to nursery with conjunctivitis, can I?

DD goes to pre school, she had a sticky eye on friday and I sent her to school, seems to have got worse over the weekend, even tho she has had eye drops, so am thinking I cannot send her to school tomorrow.

I am also thinking maybe I should take dd to the doctors to see if I can get stronger eye drops. But saying that her eyes have been better during the day today as I have kept her indoors all day.

Hmm advice needed please.

No you can't. Its very contagious. She most likely needs some antibiotic eyedrops.

domesticslattern · 07/11/2010 19:22

No, you can't, it spreads like the plague.

BTW my GP was reluctant to give drops- says it clears up anyway in time.

Hope she is better soon.

Yeah, it is what they call 'self limiting' usually but does sometimes need a kick. Best get it looked at IMO.

Actually, NHS Direct advice is that you don't need to keep them away from school here

WhyIsThatThen · 07/11/2010 19:33

Wow, I'm surprised. In that case the child can go to school but I might ask the school of their policies by phoning in the morning.

The nurseries and schools local to here accept children provided they have drops. I was very surprised to learn that after dd1 went back to nursery after a case of conjunctivitis.
Dh is a gp and very reluctant to prescribe for conjunctivitis. Hates the nursery policy as it makes people treat when it's not always necessary

domesticslattern · 07/11/2010 19:37

Myabe it depends on the nursery's policy? My DD's nursery policy explicitly says she can't come in with conjunctivitis/ sticky eye, and when I chanced it, sent us home Blush.

Did you get given a sickness policy at any point happened?

WhyIsThatThen · 07/11/2010 19:38

Yes, I can see why the policy could cause misuse of antibiotics. I feel very strongly about that.

Conjunctivitis can be either bacterial or viral (you can't tell without tests; and that would take days).

Both versions are highly transmissible and nasty to have (though unlikely to cause serious problems). You probably will get antibiotics from your GP: they typically reduce the duration of bacterial conjunctivitis to the somewhat shorter duration of viral conjunctivitis.
