DC, MIL & cat with no jabs

Hello everyone

I'm 39w pregnant with DC1. We have decided to spend Christmas with DP's mother (a couple of weeks). She has a cat that she says is not up to date with its jabs as "we never go anywhere so it doesn't need to go in a cattery". Hmm I'm a bit confused, I thought the idea of jabs was to protect the cat and other animals and people. They live in a semirural location and the cat spends a lot of time outdoors, in contact with strays, foxes and mice.

Does anyone know:

a. would there be any danger to a young baby from sharing a house with this cat?
b. if so how on earth do I approach this with MIL??

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks

I don't have cats, but I really wouldn't be too pleased to be sharing a house with a cat that hasn't had its jabs or been de-flead (If there is such a word!!)

What sort of relationship do you have with your MIL - by voicing your concerns, will she take heed or brush your concerns off as being 'silly' or 'emotional'?

I don't think the cat will be any harm to you (as long as your not cleaning out litter trays), i grew up with cats, none of them ever had jabs. I think the jabs are more to protect the cat from virus's such as 'cat flu'?

My brother used to share a cot/bed with the cat Grin (such a thing would not happen now).

We've got 2 (was 3) cats, a dog and 4 dc. None of the cats or the dog are vaccinated. They all had one set when we first got them (12+ years ago) and then no more. The risk of non-vaxing is on the animal, not the people in contact with it.

Worms and fleas are another matter, they can harm people, so all animals are wormed and flea treated.

Itsjustafleshwound - that's what I'm afraid will happen - that it will all be dismissed as silliness. To give you an idea, MIL thinks that the right way for a baby to travel by car is to sit on your lap...

Thank you everyone it's reassuring to read that there isn't a massive danger.

I hadn't thought of fleas and worms though (feel all itchy now) Smile
