Salbutamol and hyperactivity - anyone else?

My DS (2.8) has bouts of viral induced wheeze - 4 hospital stays over the last year. He takes inhaled salbutamol when he has a bout and it sends him manic. He has no control over his behaviour at all when he is on it - which given that he is hitting the terrible twos as well is very difficult to live with. Has anyone else experienced this with there little ones? If so, how do you cope?

Not with the children but I know if I take too much Ventolin (same stuff) I get proper buzzy - like I'm wired.

Oh yes. Definitely. But I find it doesn't last long (talking about ds aged 3....). The brown preventative inhaler was even worse though, so if they offer to put your ds on that, just bear it in mind......!

How do I cope? Hmm..... take him outside to run it off......

DS has viral induced wheeze and was told on last hospital admission by nurse that ventolin/salbutamol can make them a little 'high'. Not sure of remedy I am afraid.

I am interested to read your post however as my DS who is also 2.7 has only just been 'diagnosed' as having this too.

I am seeing a respiratory nurse tomorrow to discuss further and try and distinguish between asthma etc.

They won't diagnose asthma until they are 5 yo apparently. ds has been wheezy for a year plus now. we have no asthma in the family (either side) or allergies, so we are hoping he will grow out of it as many of them do. But until then, we take the inhaler everywhere with us....

Thanks orangina keen not to hijack thread but was so pleased (IYSWIM) to hear from someone else with similar issues!

Thanks

My 2 year old DS is the same. It's particularly difficult when he has to have inhaler at night as he cant go back to sleep.

My son has the same reaction to salbutamol. One of the side effects is increasing the pulse rate, so I think he just feels strange after taking it, and coupled with being able to breathe easier, is too young to understand why he feels different and bounces off the ceiling until he feels more "normal".
I'd mention it to your GP though, they are meant to log drug reactions and your DS may need his dose checking.
Good luck.

Thanks for these replies. The GP hasn't been involved - all hospital prescriptions and they were there to see the reaction. Always feels a bit odd having a child running madly around the ward looking right as rain when other children are in bed looking very poorly. He is given a huge amount when in - 5 puffs every hour at the start - and I think it has a cumulative effect.
Just good to know we are not alone.
We are signing up for a research problem looking into viral wheeze so hopefully a new treatment approach is around the corner.

Research project not problem!

DD1 only had trouble with the dose she was given in hospital - the lower dose that she took at home was ok. One one occasion she was standing on her bed shouting "I hate you mummy" and on another she went nuts in the playroom, yelling and throwing toys at me while a children and parents tour for kids having planned operations came round. There were a lot of judgey faces on the parents.

Hello, I am a teacher at a preschool in New Zealand and have noticed one of my students doing this, they will get hyper and start hurting their friends uncontrollably, to the point we have to redirect them inside to read a book with the teacher so they can have some down time,
