Did I dream this or am I righ in thinking that asthma can go away for years and then come back in cycles or something ??

I am sure i heard or read this once.

Dd2 had asthma pretty much from the word go, although it took me until she was 14mths old to get it diagnosed.

Had a hellish few years with lots of chest infections, hospital stay for pnuemonia and constant sleepless nights, but then at about 5/6 it started to lessen and dissapeared pretty much alltogether at around age 7.

She is now nearly 11 and I think it might be starting to play up again. Dd was never a wheezer, she was a cougher, coughing so much that she couldn't speak or breath, and it is the coughing of a night that has returned.

Just wondered if anyone else had a child that seemed to get rid of their asthma, only to have it return after a few years ??

Not a child but me - had it badly as child till uni then symptoms disappeared (or rather were mild) but flared up post dd.

DanceInTheDark · 01/11/2010 22:35

I had it when i was younger until around 7 or so (i remember giving myself ventolin syrup when i was chesty Shock)

it disappeared until i was pregnant with DC1.

You are right and it's a bugger. Sometimes it disappears or lessens in early adulthood only to return as you hit your 40s.

whomovedmychocolate · 01/11/2010 22:48

Mine vanished when I turned 14 and returned recently. Mine is allergy related too. Hmm

Hope your DD is okay :)

MaudOHara · 01/11/2010 22:49

Lurking as I thought I'd heard this but DH rubbished it.

DD is coming up for 7 so hoping we'll have an end to her asthma for a bit.

I got hay fever at 35 so 2 more years of it and then maybe it will stop.

DS got hay fever at 7..

Thank's all, so I am kind of right then.

I think it might well be puberty that has kicked it off again.

Have started using both inhalers again and will see how she goes this week. It was usually well controlled with her brown inhaler, but if that's no longer the case then I will take her to the gp.

I'm confused what to do about the swine flu jab though now. She was offered it last year, due to being asthmatic, but as her asthma had more or less gone I declined.
Not sure wether she should now have it this year though ?

Thank's pixie.

She's never had her peak flow checked because she was too young before, so it would be good to get that checked, hadn't thought of that.

Yes asthma can certainly 'disappear' then come back. Make an appointment with the asthma nurse sooner rather than later, and get her booked in for the flu jab. It has H1N1 in it this year so she will get both elements.

It may take a week or so for the brown one to have an effect (what dose is she having? aim for 2 puffs twice a day if she has the 100mcg one) and give her the salbutamol every 4 hours if needed, she can have it if she wakes coughing as well. As the steroid starts to work you should find the need for the blue one reduces.

Hope she's better soon Smile

TheOriginalNutcracker · 02/11/2010 21:26

Thank's again.

We started her brown inhaler about 2 days ago, 2 puffs twice a day, but it's not had much effect so far, although she hasn't got worse.

I'd say atm that she is needing the blue inhaler every 2-3 hours.

Will try and ring the surgery tomorrow to see when I can see the asthma nurse.

Ok, will def ring tomorrow. Just looked on the website for some indication of appointment times for the asthma nurse, but no joy.

Hoping it is not the same system as booking an appointment with the gp, as I will never get one.

I'll have to see if I can ring from work.

DH had asthma as a child. He had swine flu last year, right at the beginning of the outbreak, in August, and since then he has suffered with asthma almost non-stop- it has been really bad this year with lots of chest infections and asthma attacks.

I think the swine flu virus really attacked his lungs badly, so if you can do anything to minimise her exposure to it, try it.

He hadn't had the swine flu jab btw, as he hadn't been offered it, not having suffered for years.

I hope she's okay nutty.
