7m old. 'Impacted' poo? Really need help, I've been crying my eyes out.

DD is 7 months and was not herself on Friday, whingy and very clingy etc.

She has been producing dirty nappies, once a day, sometimes twice of normal soft poo. She is on Cow & Gate 6m plus, have not really started weaning as she is not interested. She drinks about 5 ounces of plain water as well as her feeds - this always kept her regular but it seems this is no longer working. :(

This morning, she started screaming for no reason - one second was laughing then screaming, her face went almost purple and she was straining.
Led her across my lap, whipped nappy off and (TMI...) there is this greeny coloured, rock hard sausage poking out, she is screaming still and bucking around, trying to sort of get away from the pain.
As much as I try to help, wiggling it a bit etc, I'm not helping, it just snaps off and you can see the rest of it up there.

This goes on for about 10 mins, I quickly run a warm shallow bath for her to lie in to try to soak it a bit, relax her. It helps a bit, she pops a little marble sized bit out then the rest ofit went back up. She was exhausted and was almost asleep in the towel before I could even get from bathroom to lounge with her.

She cried out a couple of times in her sleep then woke up, screming began again, another big sausage. A little later a bit more and she has gone to sleep again.

All in all, and this is quite gross, if you put it all end to end I would say she has passed about 7 inches of it. Could it be coming to an end yet? It is bloody awful having to watch her and all I can do is stroke her etc. :(

I have given her some sugar water - on my mothers' advice Confused - not sure it will do anything?

What else can I do?

It is not solid, I would say it is as hard a plasticine, so quite hard. Her poor little bum is all red and purple around the opening. :(

Sorry it's long, trying to give a clear picture.

a glycerine suppository is the answer

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/11/2010 14:32

Ah-ha.

Are these hard to come by?

It would seem like to get the Doc to even say anything other than 'It's nothing to worry about' is like getting blood out of a stone, let alone them actually giving me anything.

Hmm

Its not that unusual with young digestion and I can remember crying for my son (now 7) when he was a similar age and straining. We went to the doctors and they gave us a suppository and some medicine to give a little each day as required.

I worried a bit about giving medicine but the doctor said it was best that they don't get any stress associated with bowl movements.

battyralphie · 01/11/2010 14:35

poor you and poor dd. Ds had a phase of "stiff poo" as well and stomach massage to stimulate the colon function helped. Massage clockwise around the tummy button using tweo fingers and a massage oil (there are special oils for baby stomach massage but any oil is OK). Our therapist told me to do it for 15 mins for best results. sugar water Hmm

abr1de · 01/11/2010 14:37

Massage really does help.

Bonsoir · 01/11/2010 14:37

My DD got quite constipated at around the same age. I gave her stewed pureed prunes after every meal - definitely did the trick!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/11/2010 14:37

Best ring the Doc then, try to get her in.

A trip across town on the bus with all four of them... bloody teacher training days!! Wink

Orange juice is a natural laxative too, should help with the softening process. Your poor dd :(

Seona1973 · 01/11/2010 14:40

has she been on the 6m+ milk for long as the extra iron in it can cause contipation? Maybe a switch back to the first milk could help

HeadFairy · 01/11/2010 14:40

lashings of sudocreme on her bottom will help too, ds gets terribly sore and usually if I pile a load on at night before bed I notice a significant improvement the next day.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/11/2010 14:42

She is one third into her second box of the six months plus. she is kicking off again,. must go. :(

we also used glicerine suppositorys. Go to the chemist and ask for the smallest ones, cant remember size. Pop it in and a few mins later be prepared for a very full nappy.

MoChan · 01/11/2010 14:46

Aren't suppositories too big for little ones? I used cotton buds and vaseline on advice of HV at this age and it really helped. Still a bit eye-watering for DD though.

MoChan · 01/11/2010 14:47

Sorry, cross-posted with jollyma. Didn't know about the little versions.

wfrances · 01/11/2010 14:50

doctors or chemist.
my son had movicol satchets, supposiories,ky jelly and a glove.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/11/2010 14:51

Another inch of it, but definately softer and turning more yellow so maybe it's nearly all passed? Think she is so upset as she is sore from harder stuff previous.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/11/2010 14:52

The glycerine things also stimulate don't they?

OP posts:
ilovesprouts · 01/11/2010 15:02

was going to say movicol too my ds2 is on them

fannybaws · 01/11/2010 15:07

Hi OP hope the worst has passed x would def put her back on her original milk too

WeakAndMilky · 01/11/2010 17:21

sounds as though poor DD is over the worst. Its all management now to make sure it doesnt happen again. bet you are relieved as well!

vintageteacups · 01/11/2010 19:07

She dosn't need the follow on milk (unless told so by a paediatric specialist) and then, it won't bulk her up so much.

Give her prune juice on a spoon or fresh orange juice and water Don't forget she's only 7 months so she won't need lots.

Maybe slick some vaseline/nappy cream around her bottom too so any fisures are softened.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/11/2010 18:43

If she doesn't need the follow on milk I will definately put her back on the original stuff. I don't want that happening again. :(

Shelater went on to have a bit more and once it was mentioned on her, i called Mum to ask her to pop out in the car and pick me up some glycerine for her. They only took 3 mins to clear it out.

She is much happier and has today done a more normal poo, yellow and a bit dry, but not formed like it was before.

Thanks so much for all your help.

It seems it is such a common/simple problem but was so very distressing. :(
