Lice, need advice.

So last week dd came home from nursery scratching her head, I panicked and searched her for lice. I found something that I thought was empty egg cases but no live lice.

So I went to the chemist got Hedrin Once and did the whole family. I also cleaned the house and sprayed everything.

So now my head is itching. I've checked my head with a nit comb but can't find anything that looks much like a nit or lice.

Dd still has the eggs in her hair but I think the hedrin stuff doesn't get rid of the eggs, just kills them.

I'm so paranoid we still have them.

Is it easy to find a live one if you have them?

Get a nitty gritty comb and wash hair in shampoo and conditioner with tea tree oil, or wash hair in fairy liquid - go thru hair and then wash again repeat for a couple of weeks and should be okay.

However, I go thru my DD hair everynight its just a ritual I guess lol.

Easy to see the lice, and can be easy to see the eggs - not always easy to get them out, but i love the nitty gritty comb, if you can still see them its the case of using your fingers to pick them out.

I find that they can escape the comb unless you put on conditioner then comb. They can grip on tight to the hairs.

Don't panic. It's not so bad when you get used to it. Get ready for many happy years of lice combing!!

I found that Hedrin Once - which is a new product - didn't work as well as the old Hedrin which stays in for hours and has to be repeated in a week. I always get the old one now and make sure I do the second session seven days after the first as I find it really works. The instructions don't mention combing but I always do so with the nitty gritty comb. I want to see them coming out so I can gauge how many there are, how many eggs, where they're hanging out etc etc.

I have four children, three of them in primary school, and I have to do this at least once a term and often twice. I sit them in front of TV or computer to keep them happy and go through with the nitty gritty comb wiping on loo roll after each stroke.

I have many long years in service of nit combing. [sigh]

The adult lice are fairly easy to spot - couldn't beieve it when I spotted something moving in dd's hair while queuing in Sainsbury's a few weeks back ! The smaller ones do have a tendency to dart into the shadowsn and blend in with dd's hair roots but wet combing dargs the blighters to the surface and nothing more satisfying than watching them drown ! You need to comb every few days to remove any residual eggs and hatchlings before the cycle starts again. I've been combing mine over the sink to see what comes out. dc reckon I'm now obsessed !

Thanks, I gave them a good go with the comb before we went out today and didn't find anything, so I hope I've got them all.

I think I'll start checking more regularly now.

What I don't understand is the passive acceptance of head lice - we can't have a nit nurse to check the childs hair because that is classed as assault - well then, lets change the law! Mothers unite to fight the nits!! I lived in Chicago for 3 years and my kids never had nits. MOved here and bam, constant. DD comes home almost daily with a whopper or two. It's disgusting and it drives me crazzzy.

I have that nitty gritty comb, it's fantastic
