Peanut Allergy in 6 Year Old.

My son is 6 years old and has a peanut allergy.
For this he is prescribed Piriton. He has been admitted to hospital three times for nut related reactions, once by ambulance.
Now he is getting a bit older and undertakes more after school activities, I would feel happier if he had an epipen. I think sometimes that Piriton takes a bit too long to kick in.

Does anyone have any views about this?

might also be an idea to contact the Anaphylaxis Campaign for advice. Their helpline number is included in the link,
good luck,
Claire

Hi, we have a child with a severe nut allergy, which resulted in a near fatal anaphylactic reaction, we were completely unprepared and unaware of his condition, he was just two years old. We had a BRILLIANT consultant led unit at Addenbrookes who did a lot of blood tests which are the only conclusive way of finding out exactly what your child is allergic to, the severity and if there are any associated allergies ( our son is also allergic to egg. lentils and kiwi). I would press very hard to have him examined properly and the appropriate tests done, as you are right, piriton might not always do the job, although it is brilliant stuff. Has your child actually had a reaction? What type of reaction is it? If you are concerned do press for a proper referral, and as previous posts have mentioned, do contact the Anaphylaxis Campaign who have been brilliant and supportive and have lots of good advice and information. Hope this helps, am happy to provide any help or info if you need it as I would not want anyone to have to experience what we did, we now carry an Epipen everywhere and our school has been very supportive. Regards, GPL
