neurofen?

OnEdge · 28/10/2010 04:01

sorry, im no expert. if he/she is ok and still feeding etc, should be ok. i think that the worry is them having a febrile convulsion. i was told by nhs direct to reduce clothing, encourage fluids. i think you can also give ibuprofen as well as calpol. my freind told me to be careful of reducing temperatures too quickly. hope someone better comes along with good advice soon.

MrsGS · 28/10/2010 04:31

Hi wukterWOOO

Sorry to hear about your DC. My advice is if his/her temp still hasn't come down, I suggest you take him/her to the hospital. In my opinion, it is better to be safe than sorry. I few minutes of waiting in A&E would not hurt.

I don't want to scare you or anything but my DD had meningitis when she was 5wks old and one of the symptom she had was low grade fever. I took her to my GP and was told she was fine and just need to take some clothes off as it was summer then. I still didn't feel right so i took her to A&E and was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. She was in intensive care for 3 days and stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks in total. She is fine now and a happy baby but I still can't get over that the GP sent her home and 'what if' I didn't take her to A&E, I just can't bear to even say it. She didn't have any rashes in which most people even medical professionals are looking for before diagnosing meningitis.

Hope your LO gets better soon.

WelcometoProfessorJungleGore · 28/10/2010 05:02

Does LO mix with other kids.
Hand foot and mouth disease is rampant where I live ATM.(australia)
Prolonged fever and blisters starting in mouth, then hands and feet.
Not dangerous.

thelittlestkiwi · 28/10/2010 05:35

My DD was sent home from nursery with this temp. I took her to my GP who saw her straight away on his off time (bless him). He watched her in his office for 20 mins to see if baby paracetamol brought her temp down then sent us to A and E. DD had a cold and was fine. But it was worth the trip.

wukterWOOO · 28/10/2010 11:32

Thanks for your responses.

Temp has come down, still elevated and she's very lethargic. Not like herself! I will keep an eye and will bring her to docs if it spikes again. Thanks all

Hope she's feeling better.

If you have any doubts, I would take her to a doctor, tbh. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I don't like the sound of 'lethargic'. DD had fever of over 40 degrees a couple of weeks ago but paracetamol brought it down very quickly and she was very perky. If the fever doesn't go down/ goes down but baby's still behaving odd than it seems there might be a reason for it ie an infection of sorts, as opposed to some random viral thing that resolves itself quickly.

Not sure if I'm making any sense.

wukterWOOO · 28/10/2010 15:11

You are Winnybella! I have an appoointemnt with the dr later, true to form she has perked right up. Still, I'd rather get her seen at this stage.
(bye bye 45 euro, lucky I have it, eh Angry for those that can't afford that price for peace of mind)

45 euros- eeek, that's more expensive that here in Paris. Where are you?

Of course she has perked up Grin

Well we're back from the doctor, he doesn't know but to ring him the morning to let him know how she gets on. Anyway I have Neurofen now.
Winnybella - I'm in Ireland. This bloody country is in a right old state, but it's not really an appropriate rant for Children's Health. [hgrin]

Jeez...I'm so sorry to hear you have to pay for this sort of thing. How many children will have to be unlucky before they rethink...

Hope DD is fine tonight and tomorrow x

winnybella · 28/10/2010 17:37

Is she still perky or did she just do that for the doctor?

oricella · 28/10/2010 19:58

Wukter - hope she's perked up by now; no doubt you can both do with a good night sleep

Just wanted to point to this graph which is very useful in assessing fevers

MrsGS - how is your DD after the meningitis? My DD caught pneumococcal m. at 7 weeks - thankfully NHS reacted brilliantly, but she too was in PICU for a while and couple of weeks in hospital ... worst weeks of my life. She's nearly 2 now and doing fab (apologies for hijack)

wukterWOOO · 28/10/2010 20:26

Thanks all, she did a star turn for the doctor then slumped a bit when she got home, she is gone to bed now and I soon will follow.

Mrs GS & Oricella, thanks for sharing your stories, what a fright at 5/7 wks, thank God they came through.

Thanks also for that Graph Oricella, will print it out for pride of place on the fridge.

Good night - hope all's well in the morning

winnybella · 29/10/2010 11:54

How is she today?

wukterWOOO · 29/10/2010 14:52

She's much better, temp slightly elevated at times, but form is much better.
I can tell by the state of the house - more energy for destruction today.
Thanks for asking [hsmile]

My GP once told me that no decent doctor will judge a mother worried about her baby's health.

DS was "not himself" at 17 months on a Sunday in all that snow last winter. DH jumped through hoops to get an out of hours GP appointment, ever though I was saying "He'll be fine with Calpol". DS ended up in hospital for 9 days. From now on, I always think of my GP's words. They were meant kindly.

wukterWOOO · 29/10/2010 16:27

Your poor DS BikeRunScream - what was it?

Wise GP, there.

He had septic arthritis in his knee and needed IV antibiotics for a week. He couldn't walk, had a temp of 41o for 4 days and was in a lot of pain. He also had to have several blood tests everyday, and a new canula at least once a day.

wukterWOOO · 03/11/2010 21:59

Poor little mite (sorry for late response after having asked you) DD is better now - it's a virus going around I hear. Thanks for your help.
