Does anyone know of any reason why this may be happening? They are quite big and so painful for her, last month she had a bout of them that were so bad she could hardly eat for about 2 weeks, it was a viscious circle because it made her even more run down, she had them all up her tongue, in her cheeks, near her lips. She was given some treatment from the doctors and it did help but she keeps getting them still. She has good oral hygiene, brushes her teeth twice a day, rarely drinks fizzy drinks and only occasionally has sweets.

hi was it impetigo as that is cold sores that are normally around mouth nose and chin,my dd used to get them when she was about 3yrs.she used to get them on her chin.the dr told me it was very infectious but no one else in my house caught it.

bigdonna · 25/10/2010 18:45

sorry she grew out of it.maybe shes catching it from another child!!!!

Impetigo and cold sores are two different things, surely?

How old is she?

If the bout that she had last month, with lots inside her mouth, was her first ever outbreak the primary herpes infection and if she is young, that is quite normal unfortunately. The primary infection, which is often not even noticeable in older people, can be incredibly harsh in young children.

But if she is not very young, or if it wasn't her first outbreak, then I take it all back and don't know what to suggest.

What treatment was she given? Aciclovir?

If she is run down in general (you describe it as making her "even more" run down), then that could be the background reason why she is getting frequent outbreaks, and they should slow down when her general wellbeing improves. I know what you mean about the viscious circle though.

Depending on her age, if she is old enough to take a supplement, then there is an amino acid called L-Lysine (I use the brand Solgar, a bottle of them is about 6 quid) which in high doses may help to shorten and lessen the severity of a cold sore outbreak. Obviously not suitable for a very young child though (well actually I don't know if it is but I doubt it).

how old is she. Has she been given multivitamins

belgo · 26/10/2010 18:38

Is she sensitive to the toothpaste? Certain toothpastes give me ulcers in the mouth. Zendium is one that does not give me ulcers, and it was recommended by someone who had the same problem.

Also, mouth ulcers can be a symptom of hand foot and mouth illness.

I would take her to the doctor and get her checked just in case.

will take her to the docs, she can harldy eat this week. Shes not wasting away but she is feeling low because of it. Interesting about teh toothpaste...also she has large fang type teeth that need removing, Im wondering if they are rubbing and starting off the ulcers.
