Hand, Foot and Mouth, or primary exposure to coldsores?

DS is 15 months old.

He has been ill for about a week now, had a temp last Sunday, was a bit better on Monday, so sent him to nursery on Tuesday. Threw up at nursery, so was sent home, and has been generally irritable, with a temp since then. On Wednesday I noticed he had a couple of ulcers on his tongue, and his breath was starting to smell. I also noticed when I brushed his teeth on Wednesday morning, there was some blood on the brush, but I thought that he might have a tooth coming through and this was the reason for the blood. He has all of his molars.

Took him to the GP on Wednesday morning, and she checked his hands and feet and said the sores just looked like a viral infection (standard response IMO and feeling a bit fobbed off). Suggested coldsores, but GP reckoned not as she said she would expect his mouth to look more sore and it to be presenting on his lips. She gave us an anaesthetic spray, as he has not been eating, probably due to the pain. I have also been giving nurofen and calpol.

Today he has ulcers on the inside of his cheeks, 4-5 on his tongue, and a few on the roof of his mouth. His gums are red and swollen. He is so miserable with it all, and so am I! He also has a bit of a temp, despite calpol.

He doesn't have any sores on his hands and feet, but does have the odd spot (one on belly, one on leg which has nearly gone, and one on face that appeared today). In isolation I wouldn't think anything of the spots, they are nothing special, but I dont know if they are related? Also, for the last two days, I have had a really itchy rash on my feet and legs, which has been keeping me awake at night- don't know if this is related?

NHS Direct was a waste of space, told me it was a dental issue, and not to give him hard things like toast Hmm. Have booked another appointment at the Drs this afternoon.

He has had exposure to a couple of people with coldsores 8 days ago. To be honest, I will be pretty gutted if it is coldsores.

Primary exposure to coldsores is known as acute herpetic gingivostomatitis and doesn't only present on the lips as your GP suggested.

NHS direct weren't completely wrong as your dentist would have known this where your GP didn't.

So, would you say that is what it is?

It seems very likely to me.

[hsmile] Hope ds is ok

Please don't feel bad though, many children get AHGS and don't go on to suffer coldsores in adulthood.

Hi Bigcar Grin

Thanks Helen. I will be so disappointed if it is coldsores.

Just been to Out of Hours, and because of the spot on his belly and leg, she said it could now bs Chicken Pox. I don't think it is; if it is, it would be pretty mild, and the first spot on his leg appeared nearly two weeks ago. My main concern is the ulcers in his mouth, and I don't think they are related to the spot on his belly/ leg.

She seriously thought chicken pox?! It would certainly be unusual although not unheard of for just 2 spots and mouth to be chicken pox, is it going round nursery/where you live at the moment? Chicken pox spots here burst and scab over fairly quickly, and are usually fairly well on the way to healing after 2 weeks. Hand, foot and mouth here looks different and would indicate you'd have more than 2 spots. Cold sores here does sound more likely although of course I'm not in the slightest bit medically qualified.

This site would suggest as Helen said that this should give him immunity to the virus in the future.

Sounds exactly like ds - cold sores. I was gutted too, he got it from me :(. GP failed do diagnose, dentist did over phone, then my friend who is GP agreed. It's not the end of the world but is upsetting. DS had lots of milk iirc as was all he wanted, and I imagine was cooling.

whenskiesaregrey · 23/10/2010 14:20

Well, he has all of the symptoms listed there for cold sores. On the hand, foot and mouth link, the ulcers in the mouth look the same, but he doesn't have anything on his hands and feet. IMO, the spots on his belly and his leg are totally unrelated Hmm.

I just hope it clears up for him soon. He is really struggling to eat anything, and he isnt the biggest baby, so he hasn't got too much in reserve!

that site sounds a bit more postitve bigcar. I hope it doesn't come back, but at least the general concensus is that it wont be this bad if it does come back.

GreenAndBlack How long did it take your DS to get better? I know how you feel re. being gutted :(

It's hand foot and mouth. My 2 year old son was mis-diagnosed, once over the phone on tue where I was told it was a vomitting virus and then at and actuall examination appointment I was told it was chicken pox. Through researching this over the weekend I have learned that this is actually hand foot and mouth disease (not foot and mouth disease which is found in cattle) this is a human disease. I will post a link below. My letter of complaint is being drafted to my gp as wee speak.
