Congested breathing

My DS is one month old. For the past few nights his breathing has sounded a bit congested around the time of his 4/5 am feed and he takes longer to fall back asleep. He sounds like I do when I have a cold (ie. a bit blocked up and uncomfortable rather than seriously struggling to take breaths). Weirdly, this doesn't seem to bother him at any other time of day.

Any ideas about what could be causing this? At first I assumed he must have a cold (as I have a mild runny nose at the moment - not unusual when the weather starts to change) but surely this would bother him throughout the whole day?

I have not posted on Mumsnet before but have been searching the boards for advice since he was born and have found it invaluable!

Just a thought - do you have your central heating on and if so does it come on at that time? It tends to make us all a bit snuffly wehn we put our heating on.

My 6 month DS has been doing something similar since birth- a heavy nasal breathing which comes and goes and doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest. Doctor and HV said not to worry about it until he is bigger- passages are so tiny and they grow. But worth checking with your own health professionals as it can be a bit worrying. Good luck!

Thank you both for your thoughts. We have just put the central heating on in the last few days, but it is not on at night when the breathing is an issue.

Globalmummy - thanks for this, very reassuruing. Even though DS doesn't seem at all bothered by it it sounds seriously worrying in an otherwise silent bedroom in the middle of the night!!
