Do I treat for worms?

Last night ds woke up complaining of an itchy bottom - he was pretty inconsolable. I'm guessing after reading the many threads on here that it's probably threadworm Shock
Do I wait and see if it happens again tonight (plus the delightful torch trick?)or do I just bite the bullet and get some Ovex today?
I've not seen any evidence of worms yet. I feel sick just thinking about it

Get the worming tablets (one tablet sorts it - pretty painless). But whole family should have one too, to make sure no one reinfects. Put all towels in wash. Change his sheets. It's fingers in mouths or handling food that causes it. I never take a piece of food from a child's hands. Instruct everyone to wash hands after a poo. No excuses!!

FWIW it's probably come from friend at school, I'm not suggesting your hygiene is faulty! Good luck

I would just get the Ovex.

meltedmarsbars · 21/10/2010 12:44

They are everywhere in the dirt too - just get the ovex, treat everyone, then wash the sheets and towels.

I don't go as far as inkyfingers about not accepting things from childrens hands!

Round here we treat everyone about every term! Never had the nits, but always getting worms. About a third of primary pupils have them at any one time, so I've heard.

Thanks all. Midway through washing towels, pj's, sheets now but do I really need to Hoover mattresses, floors, clean bathrooms, damp dust etc?? Ive got a lot on with work right now and could do without a virtual spring clean!
The thought of this makes me want to boak!! but at least I know it's a common problem so thanks for the reassurances

When we had them I did do the whole sheebang of damp dusting and spring cleaning the entire house (every day for a week then every 2-3 days for another week). It sounds hideous and OTT! And I'm sure it was completely OTT and it was definitely hideous (and not something I would recommend - think I may have ishoos on the cleaning/worm front!)!

HV told me afterwards that all I needed to do was on the day of taking the medication for the whole family do your usual clean of the house, plus the washing you're already doing and you should be fine.

SGertie · 21/10/2010 15:20

Lol @ Zam!! I know what you mean, I feel a bit OCD at the thought but this is probably the worst week workwise for me to have to spend time cleaning instead of knuckling under and working (I work from home so the washing isnt too bad but hoovering, dusting etc would have waited til the weekend!)
Typical!

we've got them here too yuck. Ive washed bedding, towels and pj's every day for the last 3 days. Ive hoovered, damp dusted, and disinfected everthing. Im bloody knackered and so is my poor washing machine :-( should i contines changing the bedding every day??? Also ive been washing us all first thing in the morning espeically around the bum area!

zam72 · 21/10/2010 17:29

Erm...I did shower us all especially bottoms in the morning. And made everything wear pants as well as their PJs (even DH). For 2 weeks I think. But as I said, I'm not sure I'd do all that with my clear head on rather than in my freaked out Shock IT'S WORMS state!

meltedmarsbars · 21/10/2010 22:08

I would do a bit of a clean on the day you do the worming, but no more than that - but your dc's will be re-infected by their classmates within a fortnight.

There really is no point going OCD over it - they are endemic in primary schools - that means you will get them continually for months/years.

SGertie · 21/10/2010 22:56

@meltedmarsbars 'continually for years' Shock

Well, my oldest is 11 years old .......

hobbgoblin · 21/10/2010 23:04

Even as a worm-phobic, after the first time we got them I gave up all the over energetic cleaning. We all had them again a couple of weeks or so ago and I just hoovered, changed sheets once and made sure I'd washed whatever laundry there was. We've done nothing else except make sure toilet door handles and taps and stuff given a good clean. We also did a repeat ovex dose 10 days after the first and there is no sign of worms again...I've just checked them all in bed!

meltedmarsbars · 21/10/2010 23:19

When she's 11 its not really appropriate for me to check her in bed, is it!

We just "worm'n'boilwash" every term or so now.
