what can I do to help my poor ds?

He's been a bit reluctant to do poos on the loo recently, I thought he had a bit of a sore bum so I've been putting cream on at night (he still wears nappies at night, been potty trained in the day for more than 6 months now) but twice in the past two days he's had accidents, once pooing his pants and once in the bath this evening.

He been quite distressed each time he's pooed himself, and this evening I had a chat with him and he told me his bum hurts again, when I asked him how it happened he said he was kicking a ball at nursery and missed and landed on his bottom. He has got a very faint bruise on his cocxyx so it looks like he's done something there. Is there anything I can give him to help him recover from it, because it's really causing him distress that he can't poo comfortably.

if he has bruised his coccyx it will hurt when he pushes to poo. it will improve over time. if he is slightly constipated it will hurt more.

I think orange juice is a natural laxative, as are grapes. If he is really sore I would give him some calpol I think.

HeadFairy · 20/10/2010 21:44

Oh lovely thanks. I did wonder how a bruised cocxyx could affect him pooing, esp as he doesn't seem to have much of a problem doing pees. But then he doesn't have to push them out. I will definitely try to get him to have more poo softening food. I was getting him to drink loads more because originally I thought he was constipiated that's why he said it hurt to poo.

Would calpol be preferable to Nurofen? I did think of nurofen because it's an anti inflammatory. I know that they recommend taking nurofen for a few days for adults when you have a bruise/inflammation, is it the same for children?

nurofen would be better as long as he is not asthmatic.

Valpollicella · 20/10/2010 22:37

How old is he Headfairy?

If he goes for a few days you can get glycerine suppositories from the chemists which can help if he has 'held on' for too long, which might result in him trying to withold further for fear of it hurting.

Prune juice (if you can get him to have any - its quite an aquired taste and quite difficult to disguise) is very effective

HeadFairy · 20/10/2010 23:08

He's 3, does that rule out the suppositories? I think I'd have more luck administering the prune juice rectally than I'd have getting him to drink it :o However orange juice is a big fave so I'll get him a load.

He's not asthmatic so I might try him on nurofen 3 times a day for a couple of days and see how that goes, although I'm a little worried that might make him consitpated unless I'm really careful about getting him to have lots of fruit and fluids. Luckily he's really in to apples at the moment as we've just picked a load at my mum and dads and normally I have to stop him having 3 or 4 a day as I'm worried about him getting the runs, but if it helps him until his cocxyx heals then he can munch away!

nurofen shouldnt make him constipated

HeadFairy · 20/10/2010 23:17

oh lovely, thanks for that alypaly. I shall administer nurofen forthwith (er, tomorrow actually, he's asleep now, as should I be!)

No, it wouldn't rule out the suppositories - they aren't 'medicinal' so can be applied at any age really over 1 (afaik)

Honestly, they are so quick to do, you might just have to invent a story about a fairy wanting to check something out (can you tell I've done this before?)

Neurofen can make constipation worse from whet I know but I may be wrong

alypaly · 21/10/2010 21:17

headfairy....here is a section from the patient information leaflet.....no mention of causing side effects of constipation...

look under gastro intestinal side effects

hope he is getting better
