It sounds like she has chronic ear infections, so you may want to check with your gp before doing anything different.

I had a couple of ear infections every winter when I was little. My mom swore by Vicks vapour rub. She would put a tiny amount (size of a pea) in my ear canal. And it worked every time - I have no idea why.

nellieistired · 14/10/2010 17:33

daft question I hope. Has any of them actually looked down her ear?

I ask because a foreign object lodged in the ear canal would be a source of infection and also explain why she was having recurrent ear infections.

I wouldn't bother with home remedies tbh I would want a referral to an ent clinic from what you describe.

I suffer with excema actually inside my ear which used to get infected regularly and cause huge amounts of pain and swelling. I would need AB's to calm it down and it would flare up every month.

I would literally be in tears with the pain.

Could it be that?

I now use a bit of sudocreme on a cotton bud swished around right inside each ear every morning and it keeps it at bay.

If I forget, I soon know as it starts to itch within hours.

Dia - please get back to your GP and fast.

My daughter is now profoundly deaf in her right ear because of an ear infection which wasn't treated effectively.

We went and had a private consult with the hospital ENT Consultant in the end and we got drops called Gentocisin (or something like that). They are the 'big boys' of ear drops and GP's are reluctant to prescribe them. Get a referral from your GP to your nearest ENT.

Agree with Doodlez, get referral as soon as possible, if not possible then A&E or private paediatrician (Portland hospital for example). Can cause deafness but also brain inflammation, very serious if not treated properly.

I think you need to take her to be seen againt. I wouldn't bother with over the counter at this stage she needs an ENT specialist.

kissingfrogs · 15/10/2010 22:08

please don't put home remedies in a child's ear when they have an INFECTION. You will most likely aggrevate the infection if you do.

ENT is a must ASAP

MrsBeDoneByAsYouDid · 15/10/2010 22:21

Totally agree with the demand of immediate referral.

I have now had 20 operations on my left ear due to a GP doling out amoxicillin for years... 3 major surgery

Don't want to be a scare monger but it ruled my life for decades & have a significant hearing loss & you want to avoid that for your dd if at all possible.

She could have a middle or inner ear infection which are incredibly hard for a gp to spot. She could have a hole in her ear drum which lets in infection, she could just have a stubborn outer ear infection & nothing at all to panic about, but really best for an expert to tell you that!

Has anyone told you to be very careful not to get water in her ears? When infected water is a bad thing to get down there, so care needed when washing hair, swimming etc

finally please don'tmess around with any home remedies, ears are incredibly intricate.

Good luck.
