If your DD was in a pavlik harness - did this delay her walking?

This is a shout out for my fellow pavlik harness veterans. My DD is now 19m and is not yet walking, which is starting to concern me a bit. I have put a general post about this in behaviour/development (here), but I wondered if anyone whose DC was in a pavlik harness for DDH has had the same problem? I did a search on the internet and this seemed to suggest that DDH is not associated with delayed walking. Until now, I assumed the delay was because of her time in the harness, but if it's not, I'm wondering if there might be some other as yet unidentified problem.

If you are around and can share your experiences, I'd be very grateful.

Just bumping for any pavlik harness/DDH veterans around this evening ...

How long was she in the harness?

My DD had hers from about 7 months - she was cruising (very surprisingly) before that

And she ripped 2 harnesses apart standing up in hers

Hi Katy blimy that must have been fun! My DD was in for 3 months from 3mo to 6mo. She didn't even crawl until she was out of it for several months. I'm just not sure now whether her delays are due to the DDH or whether there might be some other problem. Or indeed nothing wrong at all. Clearly it didn't delay your DD Smile. I've followed your posts about her btw and have had my fingers crossed for you both but never felt I had anything useful to say. Hope you and her are doing ok at the moment.

she's doing really well

Thanks

Umm she is a competitive dancer now & was in her harness for about 5 months (I think) - so long term I think things are OK

Short term 19 m is old to not walk but not unheard of - is there anything else you are worried about (hand/eye co-ordination, concentration, sitting up)?

DrCosyTiger · 15/10/2010 09:06

Oh Katy I'm soooo pleased things are better for you and your DD now. You've had an incredibly hard few months and you deserve a bit of a break.

My DD doesn't appear to have any other developmental delays - speech/understanding/motor skills all fine. Just the walking. I do have a nagging feeling something is a bit wrong though, her legs seem weak to me, so I think I'll get her checked out. Just didn't want to have any more dealings with hospitals/doctors than absolutely necessary as we didn't have the greatest experience with them when they were dealing with her DDH.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi DrCosy - no delay here but balance was shocking for a while though! I'd say go with your gut instinct and get her checked out. You can ask not to see a certain member of medical staff if there's one in particular who caused you bother...

Pinkjenny · 15/10/2010 09:20

Hi DrCosy - dd walked at 14 months, which I suppose isn't delayed. I do remember being told at Alder Hey that the spectrum for walking age is so wide that you would never know if it was down to the harness or not.

As a reminder, she was in her harness from 2 to 15 weeks old.

inveteratenamechanger · 15/10/2010 09:31

Hi DrCosy, yes DD's crawling, standing and walking was definitely delayed. She is steady as anything now though(2.5 years). She was in her harness from c. 4 months to c. 8 months.

But I would go ahead and get her checked out if you are worried.

KatyMac · 15/10/2010 10:05

My DD loved being in one of those bouncy harness hanging from a door things - that built up her legs muscles a lot (IMO) but get it checked before 'forcing' weight bearing maybe?

Pinkjenny · 15/10/2010 10:13

KatyMac - we were told not to put dd in a door hanger or a walker. I'd speak to the HV, DrCosy. I know it's scary, and the last thing you want is more medical appointments and investigations, but signs are good. She's weight bearing, cruising etc, hopefully it's just a matter of time.

KatyMac · 15/10/2010 10:23

Isn't it odd - our consultant said no to the walker & yes to the bouncer?

Pinkjenny · 15/10/2010 10:24

Very odd. You would hope they would all be fairly consistent with advice. I always wondered why she wasn't allowed in the hanger, but was allowed in the sling, which seemed to force her legs into a certain position anyway.

DrCosyTiger · 15/10/2010 13:33

Hello again everyone, especially to my friends from pavlik harness threads of old, thank you so much for replying. I will get DD checked out, I can see my reasons not to are a bit rubbish really now I've written them down. Fingers crossed.
