Would you compare the tongue to a strawberry?

If so, I would take her to her gp, as it could be scarlet fever (sp). My son had that, first we thought it was tonsillitis, then it turned out to be scarlet fever.

biglips · 14/10/2010 13:13

yikes! yes it does look like a strawberry and she did had a white coat on her tongue.

atm ive got tonsillitis too.

it mentions a rash which she had got all over her body and now she is itchy today...this is her 5th and her docs just gave her paracemtomol 250g. her temp is still high as it was very high but now lower down a bit.

You will need to get her penicillin, so please take her back to the docs. My son was SO ill. You have my sympathies.

biglips · 14/10/2010 13:20

many thanks as just ringing the docs now.

Good luck! Smile

my dd gets that too, she is prone to bouts of tonillitis and gets raised bumps with white patches (looks little like thrush)

She usually gets given anti bi to clear the infection.

hope dd gets better soon

biglips · 14/10/2010 13:26

im annoyed that she wasnt given antib in the first place as her poor throat was very raw red and now she had been off school all week and now prob next week!!! half term is next wed for a week so altogether she been off for 3 weeks!!

OP posts:
spookyhalloweenFluffypomkins · 14/10/2010 13:42

it depends on if its viral or bacterial.
if its viral tonsillitis then she wouldnt be given anti b, but as she has been unwell for so long then it probbly is?

biglips · 14/10/2010 14:13

when i took her to the docs on monday she didnt have the spotty tongue or white tongue look like thrush till the day after.

My dp taken her to the walk in centre as cant fit in at her docs

flimflammery · 14/10/2010 14:49

biglips · 14/10/2010 15:51

yes she def got scarlet fever Sad

what to do next? do i need to buy calamine lotion for his itchness on her body? or will the antib will clear that

abs should kick in quickly . Try Eurax or Piriton for any itchiness. ds was back to himslef within a couple of days with no peeling. Lots of throat infections aren't bacterial and some schools of thought don't recomemnd ab's for SF. SF is a complication of the strep bacterial infection and suggests she has had that previously.

QuintessentialShadows · 14/10/2010 16:05

The antibitics will normally kick in within 48 hours. Scarlet fever is not so common, and you cant really distinguish easily between scarlet fever and "normal sore throat" until the tongue turns into a strawberry. Bacterial tonsillitis usually come with white dots in the throat, whereas viral tonsillitus comes with a raw red throat. Sad

Can you tell I have experience of this? My son had a tonsillectomy when he was 5, as he had tonsillitis every month throughout winter. It became really noticable when he started school, as he usually fell ill around the 20th of each month. I kept all the letters to the school.

mumbar · 14/10/2010 16:20

I used a great calomine lotion when DS had CP. Its an aquarious calamine and can rub in - its a bit like sudocream - hope dd is feeling better soon.

biglips · 14/10/2010 20:16

well me and my dp were talking about last year's tonsillitis and she had the strawberry tongue and was really off her food (same as this time) but had no itchess, a white tongue (thrush like) and she was well 5 days later.

im shitting myself that she could've of had SF last year with no treatment!!!! Shock. Is the strawberry tongue is the sign for just SF?

OP posts:
LIZS · 15/10/2010 07:35

I tthink they only get SF once but can have Strep Throat/tonsillitis infections several times. If she hasn't had any ill effects since the bout last year it proabbly isn't worth fretting over now. ds was vomitng with SF and only had a face rash.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/10/2010 17:49

biglips - the SF rash is unmissable and very distinctive. It has a sandpapery feel to it not like a usual 'viral' rash. And it usually results in peeling of the fingers and toes.

biglips · 15/10/2010 19:19

yes thats right about the rash and her chin is looking shabby and red..maybe peeling?

biglips · 18/10/2010 19:29

well she is getting better by the day now and will be contagious until tmrw (going by the 1st day of her antibotics as day one for the next 4 days (its today), so tmrw is contagious-free), gotta carry on giving her antib till Sunday, but her tongue is still abit spotty tonight, if it is still the same tmrw morning, is she still contagious??

OP posts:
biglips · 18/10/2010 19:47

sorry its 5 days not 4

OP posts:
biglips · 18/10/2010 22:06

unsure if that wasnt clear or not

tmrw is back to school time for my dd1 but tonight her tongue is still spotty, if it still spotty tmrw it is no school till her tongue is back to normal?
